Ce livre traite de la suprématie du spirituel sur le temporel avec comme point de départ la révolte des Kshatriyas (la caste chevaleresque) contre les Brâhmanes (la caste sacerdotale) dans la civilisation hindoue. En Occident, cette querelle s'incarne en l'opposition du pape et de l'empereur, dont Victor Hugo parlait comme des " deux moitiés de Dieu ". René Guénon souligne que les deux pouvoirs, temporel et spirituel, étaient à l'origine réunis dans un principe commun, ce qu'illustrait encore dans l'Empire romain le titre d'Imperator Pontifex Maximus. Au Moyen Âge, la représentation emblématique d'une figure à double-face – celles du Christ et de Janus – révèle cette unicité : la figure détenait dans une main le sceptre, symbole du pouvoir royal, et dans l'autre la clé, symbole du pouvoir spirituel. L'usurpation du temporel par rapport au spirituel est aujourd'hui encore une querelle récurrente. Notre actualité donne une saveur particulière à ces considérations que l'on pourrait penser obsolètes, alors même que ce livre est plus que jamais nécessaire pour surplomber et comprendre cette opposition majeure.
