Fascination with royal pomp and circumstance is as old as kingship itself. The authors of Coronations examine royal ceremonies from the ninth to the sixteenth century, and find the very essence of the monarchical state in its public presentation of itself. This book is an enlightened response to the revived interest in political history, written from a perspective that cultural historians will also enjoy. The symbolic and ritual acts that served to represent and legitimate monarchical power in medieval and early modern Europe include not only royal and papal coronations but also festive entries, inaugural feasts, and rulers' funerals. Fifteen leading scholars from North America, Britain, France, Germany, Poland, and Denmark explore the forms and the underlying meanings of such events, as well as problems of relevant scholarship on these subjects. All the contributions demonstrate the importance of in-depth study of rulership for the understanding of premodern power structures. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary approaches, drawing on the findings of ethnography and anthropology, combined with rigorous critical evaluation of the written and iconic evidence. The editor's historiographical introduction surveys the past and present of this field of study and proposes some new lines of inquiry. "For 'reality' is not a one-dimensional matter: even if we can establish what actually transpired, we still need to ask how it was perceived by those present." This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1990.

A History of the Counts of Brienne traces the origins of the Brienne dynasty from the tenth century, as counts of a small, minor county in the Champagne region of France, to prominent crusaders in the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries, one of whom would go on to become king of Jerusalem and emperor of Constantinople. In the late 1090s, impelled by the words of Pope Urban II, thousands of Europeans took up arms and set out from Western Europe to reclaim Jerusalem from the Saracens. Jerusalem was recaptured, and the ruling classes of the Latin East were formed by nobles, predominantly French, who established themselves as kings, princes and magnates. After the success of the First Crusade, word of the defeat of the Saracens and the opportunity for upward mobility in the Holy Land began to spread rapidly across the West and additional waves of crusaders and settlers made their way to the Levant. French dynasties, usually titled, landed families of some sway, such as the Lusignan, the Montlhery, the Montfort, and the Brienne, amongst others, were attracted to the Holy Land for various reasons: some due to religiosity, others for the opportunity to further increase their landholdings and wealth. In A History of the Counts of Brienne, Dana Celeste Robinson brings into focus the importance of family, tradition of crusading and pilgrimage, and political advancement through marriage in the Latin East to the Brienne and other families at a time when the seeds of geo-political unrest were planted: its fruit an unfortunate legacy as the struggle for peace in the Holy Land continues today. In a panoramic assessment using archival research, this comprehensive history of the counts of Brienne and their origins serves as an original work of scholarship on the preeminence of localized power in Medieval France and the ascendancy of dynastic influence in the Holy Land during the age of the crusades.

In the ever increasing volume of Byzantine Studies in recent years there seems to be one very apparent void, namely, the history and culture of the Byzantine Jewry, its presence and impact on the surrounding convoluted Byzantine world between Late Antiquity until the conquest of Byzantium (1453). With the now classic but dated studies by Joshua Starr and Andrew Sharf, the collective volume at hand is an attempt to somewhat fill in this void. The articles assembled in this volume are penned by leading scholars in the field. They present bird's eye views of the cultural history of the Jewish Byzantine minority, alongside a wide array of surveys and in-depth studies of various topics. These topics pertain to the dialectics of the religious, literary, economic and visual representation world of this alien minority within its surrounding Byzantine hegemonic world.

This volume of studies seeks an anthropological view of medicine and the healing arts as they were situated within the lives of medieval people. Miracle cures and charms as well as drugs and surgery fall within the scope of the authors represented here, as does advice about diet and regimen. As well, the volume looks at wellness and illness in broad contexts, avoiding the tendency of modern medicine to focus on the isolation and definition of pathological states.

The twenty studies collected in this volume focus on the transition from the Middle Ages to the modern world. The method leads from technical investigations on William Durant the Younger (ca. 1266-1330) and Hermann Conring (1606-1681) through reflection on the nature of historical knowledge to a break with historicism, an affirmation of anachronism, and a broad perspective on the history of Europe. The introduction explains when and why these studies were written, and places them in the context of contemporary historical thinking by drawing on Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. This book will appeal to historians with an interest in historical theory, historians of late medieval and early modern Europe, and students looking for the meaning of history.
