Cette présente étude s‘intéresse aux représentations de la mort dans le roman africain francophone, notamment aux symboles, aux espaces, aux personnages ou encore aux formes de la mort. Devant les défis évidents qu’elle pose, la démarche de Mohamed Aït-Aarab est sans précédent. À la fois synchronique et diachronique, Mongo Beti, un écrivain engagé nous donne en effet à lire un essai exhaustif d’appréhension de l’oeuvre de Mongo Beti en tenant compte de sa complexité. Certes, l’ouvrage ne s’inscrit point dans la tradition de « l’homme et l’oeuvre », et ne cherche pas à respecter l’équilibre entre l’engagement que révèle l’écriture et celui de l’homme dans son quotidien. Il n’empêche que l’oeuvre de Mongo Beti, faite de romans et d’essais, est indissociable de son action militante. Dans l’analyse de ce qu’il appelle « romans d’un retour au pays natal » et surtout dans le décryptage du discours agonique, Mohamed Aït-Aarab revient de manière plus explicite encore sur le rôle social de Mongo Beti, avec la mise en perspective de ses interventions dans les journaux camerounais, l’analyse de ses querelles avec des compatriotes et le fossé tant idéologique que théorique et pratique qui le séparait des pseudo-intellectuels qui encombrent le paysage socioculturel africain. Voilà sans doute pourquoi on a pu dire que Mongo Beti était le plus fou des Camerounais de sa génération, une manière de reconnaître qu’il était un prophète, c’est-à-dire un homme dont la liberté de pensée, de parole et d’action n’aura cessé de nous étonner et surtout de nous interpeller.
