Farcical elements were incorporated into non-comic drama ever since the theatre had been rediscovered in the Middle Ages. Already at a very early stage, comic scenes proved to be popular additions to liturgical music drama and, later, to religious plays in the vernacular. Some scholars believe that the genre of farce developed out of these farcical elements. The suggestion was made that farces, similar to the stuffing of meat or poultry, had been added to plays to increase audience involvement. Other researchers see quite different origins for the farce. The present volume does not aspire to solve the question of the relationship between the two types of "comedy" on the medieval stages but its editors hope that it will nevertheless contribute to this discussion. In addition, it will enable its readers to form an impression of the huge variety of the comic in the vast area of medieval and early Renaissance theatre and drama.

L'Angola, riche en pétrole, en diamants, avec des infrastructures en grands progrès au cours des années 1960-1974, une élite urbaine non négligeable et parfois de vieille tradition, n'avait-il pas tout pour réussir ? Pourtant, la guerre civile commence alors même que la guerre anticoloniale contre le régime dictatorial portugais n'est pas terminée, avec des affrontements armés entre les trois mouvements. Cela montre les racines historiques du conflit, qui n'est pas qu'une " guerre de basse intensité " dans le contexte de la Guerre froide. Certes, ce contexte pèse lourd, mais les alignements politiques internationaux qui se produisent (le MPLA avec l'URSS et Cuba, le FNLA avec les Etats-Unis et le Zaïre, l'Unita passant de la Chine maoïste à l'Afrique du Sud) sont d'abord dus aux trajectoires spécifiques des milieux sociaux qui composent les élites et les bases de ces mouvements. C'est la sociologie historique de ces conflits incessants qui est abordée dans ce premier des deux volumes d'articles de Christine Messiant publiés à titre posthume : comment la longévité de la guerre provoque une ethnicisation qui n'était pas une donnée de départ ; comment cette même durée provoque l'émergence de deux " partis armés " qui n'ont pas vraiment besoin de leurs populations - ne serait-ce le recrutement des soldats - pour faire la guerre, le premier étant pratiquement un Etat offshore, le second contrôlant longtemps le trafic international des diamants ; comment la communauté internationale a une responsabilité écrasante dans l'échec organisé de divers accords de paix, l'objectif étant la pacification et jamais la démocratisation ; comment la faible société civile angolaise, notamment par le biais des Eglises, va tenter de percer le mur du silence pour exiger une paix sans vainqueur ni vaincu, et finalement échouer dans cette voix. Le second volume, L'Angola postcolonial. 2. Sociologie politique d'une oléocratie, porte plus précisément sur la sociologie de l'État clientéliste, en rapport étroit avec la situation de guerre étudiée dans le premier volume.
