Collective Memory examines the difficult transmission of memory in France of the Algerian War of independence (1954-1962). Emphasizing the current lack of transmission of memories of this war through a detailed case study of three crucial vectors of memory-the teaching of school history, coverage in the media, and discussion in the family- author Jo McCormack argues that lack of transmission of memories is feeding into contemporary racism and exclusion in France. Collective Memory draws extensively on interviews with historians, teachers, and pupils, as well as on secondary sources and media analysis. McCormack proposes that a greater "work of memory" needs to be undertaken if France is to overcome the division in French society that stems from the war. There has been little reconciliation of divisive group memories, a situation that leaves many individuals without a voice on this important subject. "Memory battles" dominate discussion of the topic as many issues periodically flare up and cannot yet be overcome. Book jacket.

The Crimean War (1854–56) is widely considered the first modern war with its tactical use of railways, telegraphs, and battleships, its long-range rifles, and its notorious trenches – precursors of the Great War. It is also the first media war: the first to know the impact of a correspondent on the field of battle and the first to be documented in photographs. No one, however, including the French themselves, seems to remember that France was there, fighting in Crimea, losing 95,000 soldiers and leading the Allied campaign to victory. It would seem that the Crimean War has no place in the canon of culturally retained historical events that define modern French identity. Looking at literature, art, theatre, material objects, and medical reports, The Crimean War and Cultural Memory considers how the Crimean War was and was not represented in French cultural history in the second half of the nineteenth century. Ultimately, the book illuminates the forgotten traces that the Crimean War left on the French cultural landscape.

Les textes réunis ici sont le résultat d'un des groupes du programme international de recherche sur Identité et conscience européennes au XXe siècle qui s'est proposé d'étudier le rôle des guerres dans la mémoire des Européens et leur effet sur leur conscience d'être européen. Les guerres de ce XXe siècle, les deux guerres mondiales en particulier, ont marqué la mémoire collective des Européens. Jusqu'ici, il a été courant d'analyser la façon dont ces traumatismes guerriers ont provoqué des haines, renforcé les patriotismes, exacerbé les nationalismes et transformé les différentes consciences nationales. Les analyses présentées cherchent à savoir si, au-delà des passions nationales, les guerres n'ont pas contribué au contraire, du fait des expériences similaires vécues pendant ces instants tragiques, à l'émergence d'une conscience voire d'une identité commune des Européens. Elles montrent l'ambivalence d'une mémoire des guerres, tiraillée et galvaudée par toute une série d'événements tandis qu'une mémoire européenne est à construire si l'on veut aboutir à l'émergence d'une conscience européenne dont le groupe de recherche n'a pu constater que des fragments ici et là.

Beautiful War explores the interdependent political, linguistic, and erotic registers of lesbian feminism in Monique Wittig's novels, querying in particular how they function collectively to destabilize male hegemony and heterosexism. Beginning with the assertion that Wittig expressly dismantles the Classical veneration of la belle femme in order to create an agent more capable of social change (la femme belliqueuse), the author traces the permutations of violence through her four novels, L'Opoponax, Les Guérillères, Le Corps Lesbien, and Virgile, Non and examines the relevance of brutality to Wittig's feminist agenda. Drawing on literary criticism, intellectual and political history, queer theory, and feminist theory in his readings of the primary texts, the author argues that Wittig's oeuvre constitutes a progressive textual actualization of paradigm shifts toward gender parity and a permanent banishment of the primacy of male and heterosexist political and sexual discourse.
