The chapters examine issues of identity, gender, youth, citizenship, politics and ideology across a range of media, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines and the internet. The result is a multilingual survey of the construction of language in and by the media that will be essential reading for students and researchers of sociolinguistics or language and communication.

In derelict Dresden a cultivated, middle-class family does all it can to cope amid the Communist downfall. This striking tapestry of the East German experience is told through the tangled lives of a soldier, surgeon, nurse and publisher. With evocative detail, Uwe Tellkamp masterfully reveals the myriad perspectives of the time as people battled for individuality, retreated to nostalgia, chose to conform, or toed the perilous line between East and West. Poetic, heartfelt and dramatic, The Tower vividly resurrects the sights, scents and sensations of life in the GDR as it hurtled towards 9 November 1989. Uwe Tellkamp was born in 1968 in Dresden. After completing his military service, he lost his place to study medicine on the grounds of 'political sabotage'. He was arrested in 1989, but went on to study medicine in Liepzig, Dresden and New York, later becoming a surgeon. He has won numerous regional prizes for poetry, as well as the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize for The Sleep in the Clocks. In 2008, he won the German Book Prize for The Tower.

Insights Into Islamic Esoterism And Taoism written by René Guénon and has been published by Sophia Perennis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Religion categories.

This small volume brings together a number of Guénon's early articles relating to Sufism (tasawwuf), or Islamic esoterism. A later article, 'Islamic Esoterism', has also been included, since it articulates so well the particularities of initiation in Islam by defining the fundamental elements of tasawwuf: shari'ah, tariqah, haqiqah. The first constitutes the necessary fundamental exoteric basis; the second, the Way and its means; the third, the goal or final result. In the other chapters, Guénon expresses with his usual synthetic clarity what tawhid and faqr are, and gives examples of traditional sciences, relating angelology to the Arabic alphabet, and chirology to the science of letters ('ilm al-huruf). A number of book and article reviews give further insights into Islamic cosmology. Some may feel that the essay 'Taoism and Confucianism' here included has little relevance to Sufism and Islam. However, such writers as Toshihiko Izutsu and Sachiko Murata have drawn many parallels between the two traditions. Confucianism, concentrating on social and interpersonal norms, functions as a kind of shari'ah in the context of Chinese religion, while Taoism, like Sufism, is precisely the esoteric Way.

Allan Houser written by Barbara Henderson Perlman and has been published by Smithsonian Books (DC) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1992 with Art categories.

"Here is the first major book on the life and work of the dean of Native American sculptors. Born on a small farm in Oklahoma more than seventy years ago, Houser (his Indian name is Ha-o-zous, written as Haozous) is today an internationally celebrated artist. As a gifted interpreter of the changing tribal world he knows so well, he has created a unique sculptural legacy. The direct emotional appeal of his work is universal. It is represented in such diverse collections as those of the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, Princess Anne of Great Britain, the Duke and Duchess of Bedford, Robert Redford, the Dahlem Museum, West Berlin, and many other individuals, museums, institutions, and corporations in the United States and abroad. Seeing the sophisticated sculptural art of Allan Houser, which ranges in style from almost purely representational genre pieces to totally abstract works in steel, bronze, and stone, it is hard to realize that he was born only a short time after his people were released from twenty-seven years of captivity by the U.S. Government. His father, Sam Haozous, was one of the small band of Apaches captured with Geronimo in 1886. From his father, Houser acquired a deep understanding and appreciation of his tribal heritage--which had been carried into almost all of his work, directly or indirectly. The text of this book skillfully interweaves Houser's life as an artist and his personal background, fully discussing the work in terms of their origins, aesthetic characteristics, and relation to the history of sculpture, while revealing the artist's philosophy and view of the world. The author shows that Houser has always been alert to the directions of his contemporaries, such as Noguchi, Moore and Hepworth, but has been steadfast in finding his own Way. Illustrated are nearly 300 works, 132 of them in full color, as well as many rare and fascinating photographs documenting the story of Allan Houser and his people"--Amazon.com.
