La toponymie (ou étude des noms de lieux) est plus avancée, du moins en ce qui concerne la France, que l’anthroponymie (étude des noms de personnes). Mais l’ouvrage capital d’Auguste Longnon, sur ce sujet, est surtout destiné aux spécialistes. On trouvera ici pour la première fois, un exposé rationnel des phénomènes généraux et des principes qui dominent la toponymie. Malgré les recherches, bien des cantons de ce vaste domaine sont encore peu ou point défrichés : les noms de rivières, les noms de montagnes et accidents de terrain, les lieux-dits. Même la toponymie des lieux habités renferme encore une grande part d’inconnu. Le principal attrait de ces études, c’est la perspective qu’elles ouvrent sur les lointains de notre passé linguistique, car les noms de lieux renferment les éléments les plus archaïques de la langue.
