لم يكن مبدأ المكافأة وليد حقبة زمنية معينة أو ابتكار أمة دون غيرها من الأمم، بل هو قديم قدم بدء خلق الإنسان، فقد فطر الله الإنسان منذ أن وطأت قدماه الأرض على الإيمان بالثواب و العقاب من قبل خالقه، فهو يدرك تماماً أن الثواب والنعيم لمن يحسن و يجيد، بينما العقاب والويل لمن يسيء أو يقصر، و كان طبيعياً أن يفطن الحكام لتلك الفطرة البشرية، فاستخدموا سياسة جمعت بين الترغيب و الترهيب لبسط المحبة وإحكام القبضة، و مصر بحكم كونها من أقدم الحضارات على الأرض فلا ريب أن حكامها قد طبقوا هذا المنهاج على المخلصين من الرعية، ولذلك ربما وجدت المكافآت العسكرية منذ أقدم عصور مصر خاصة و أن المصادر الأثرية تشير إلى وجود مناوشات عسكرية منذ عصور ما قبل التاريخ و لابد أنه كان هنالك من كان يسترعي ببطولته و شجاعته أنظار حكامهم (ملوكهم) فاستحق المكافأة مقابل ذلك. وقد تنوعت المكافآت التي كان الفراعنة يغدقونها على المتميزين من العسكريين و المدنيين. فكانت هناك المكافآت الذهبية من أوسمة و أنواط وكذلك كانت هنالك المكافآت بالوظائف و الألقاب الشرفية أو الفخرية ومكافآت الأثاث الجنازي و كذلك المكافآت بالأسرى والرقيق و العقارات من أراض وغيرها.
