This monograph investigates the temporal properties of those predicates referring to individuals – the so-called individual-level (IL) predicates – in contrast to those known as stage-level (SL) predicates. Many of the traditional tenets attributed to the IL/SL dichotomy are not solidly founded, this book claims, as it examines current theoretical issues concerning the syntax/semantics interface such as the relation between semantic properties of predicates and their syntactic structure. By using the contrast found in Spanish copular clauses (ser vs. estar), Individuals in Time shows that the conception of IL predicates as permanent and stative cannot be maintained. The existence of nonstative IL predicates is demonstrated through analyzing the correlation between the syntactic presence of certain projections (specifically, prepositional complements) and process-like aspect properties. This detailed examination of IL predicates in the domains of inner aspect, outer aspect, and tense will be welcomed by scholars and students with an interest in event structure, tense, and aspect.

The format of an innovative dialogue with classical authors — a cornerstone of Estellesian expression — constitutes an ingenious invocation and parodic commentary on the output and ethos of the Latin poets Horace, Ovid, Virgil and Catullus, the medieval patriarch of Valencian letters Ausiàs March and the Renaissance Castilian poet, Garcilaso de la Vega. For Estellés, Octavian Rome provides a parallel to the Franco dictatorship and the historical framework surrounding these writers affords the neophyte an opportunity for ideological denunciation, creative wit and lyrical grace as well as righteous anger at the oppressive pettiness of life under autocracy. Previous Fa d’Ambô grammars are all written in Spanish, either in the spirit of Latin grammar models (Vila 1891, Barrena 1957) or in the tradition of Romance philology (Zamora Segorbe 2010). A Grammar of Fa d’Ambô aims to overcome the shortcomings of these grammars by providing a comprehensive description of the language from a creolistic, typological, and general linguistics perspective. The grammar covers all major domains of grammar and the different types of interactions between them. The book further includes transcribed texts (about 12,000 words), a Fa d’Ambô-English word list (about 1,140 entries) and supplementary audio materials corresponding to the transcribed texts and spectrograms. Being the first comprehensive Fa d’Ambô grammar written in English, the book aims at a wide readership of scholars who are interested in creoles, language typology, and language documentation in general, but also targets a specialized readership in Portuguese-related creoles. The grammar is further expected to make a substantial contribution to our understanding of the relation between Fa d’Ambô and its better-known sister languages Santome, Angolar, and Lung’Ie (Principense), spoken on the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe. Joan B. Pastor Aicart (Beneixama, 1849-1917) va ser metge rural i un escriptor molt prolífic, tant en castellà com en valencià. Si bé ha estat conegut com a poeta, la seua obra abraça tot tipus de gèneres literaris: assaig, teatre, articles de premsa, crítica literària, narrativa curta, etc. Fins ara, la seua figura ha passat desapercebuda dins del moviment de la Renaixença valenciana, tot i ser l'autor més premiat al llarg dels territoris de parla catalana durant aquells anys de renaixement lingüístic. El caràcter conservador i religiós d'una bona part de la seua obra i el seu tarannà social discret, que el va fer viure lluny de la capital i sempre més atent al treball que no a l'aparició en els cenacles literaris de l'època, han mantingut probablement oculta la importància dels seus escrits. Aquest llibre, que intenta ser una reconstrucció de la seua biografia intel·lectual, presenta també una breu selecció dels seus textos més rellevants.
