Journalist and spectacularly successful governor, Carlos Lacerda was Brazil's foremost orator in this century and its most controversial politician. He might have become president in the 1960s had not the military taken over. In the first volume, John F. W. Dulles paints a portrait of a rebellious youth, who had the willfulness of his prominent father and who crusaded for Communism before becoming its most outspoken foe. Recalling Lacerda's rallying cry, Brazil must be shaken up, Dulles traces the career of the journalist whose unsparing attacks on the men in power led authorities to imprison him and employ thugs who pummeled him physically. Lacerda's spirited oratory helped him become Brazil's most popular congressman, but it scared the rulers of Brazil, who prohibited the broadcast of his speeches after he returned from exile in 1956. Their effort to deprive him of his mandate stirred the entire nation and culminated in one of the most dramatic sessions ever held in the Chamber of Deputies.

La leyenda de María Egipciaca, la famosa pecadora de Egipto, es uno de los ejemplos más notables de conversión y de penitencia de toda la historia cristiana: prostituta por placer desde los 12 años a los 29 en Alejandría, se une a un barco de peregrinos con destino a Jerusalén para adorar la Santa Cruz; allí, una fuerza sobrenatural le impide entrar en una iglesia, lo que la lleva a arrepentirse y rezar, retirándose al desierto donde permanecerá cuarenta y siete años. Parece ser que el autor de la primera biografía de María Egipciaca fue el arzobispo de Jerusalén, Sofronio (550-638), multiplicándose las versiones desde su fuente oriental al latín, griego y lenguas romances. Aunque la iglesia excluyó a María de la lista de los santos, su vida se convirtió en arquetipo de arrepentidas y ha inspirado a poetas, pintores y escultores.De entre las versiones en lenguas romances, se conocen catorce francesas en prosa y cuatro en verso, redactadas todas ellas en octosílabos; la cuarta, de la que se ocupa este trabajo, es la de Rutebeuf, uno de los autores más representativos del medievo francés, y cuya actividad literaria se desarrolla entre 1250 y 1280.La presente edición del texto de Rutebeuf, coeditada por los servicios de publicaciones de las universidades de Castilla-La Mancha y Córdoba, incluye una traducción en verso al castellano, así como un estudio de la obra.La Introducción, edición, traducción y notas han corrido a cargo de Miguel Ángel García Peinado y Ricardo Redoli Morales, profesionales ambos de reconocido prestigio entre la comunidad académica y científica de su ámbito.
