Family Stories And The Life Course written by Michael W. Pratt and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-04-26 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This edited book draws from work that focuses on the act of telling family stories, as well as their content and structure. The process of telling family stories is linked to central aspects of development, including language acquisition, affect regulation, and family interaction patterns. This book extends across traditional developmental psychology, personality theory, and family studies. Drawing broadly on the epigenetic framework for individual development articulated by Erik Erikson, as well as on conceptions of the family life cycle, the editors bring together contemporary examples of psychological research on family stories and their implications for development and change at different points in the life course. The book is divided into sections that focus on family stories at different points in the life cycle, from early childhood and the beginnings of narrative skill, through adolescence, young adulthood, midlife, and then mature adulthood and its intergenerational meaning. During each of these periods of the life cycle, research focusing on individual development within an Eriksonian framework of ego strengths and virtues is highlighted. The dynamic role of family stories is also featured here, with work exploring the links between family process, intergenerational attachment, and storytelling. Sociocultural theories that emphasize how such development is situated in the wider cultural context are also featured in several chapters. This broad lifespan developmental focus serves to integrate the exciting diversity of this work and foster further questions and research in the emerging field of family narrative. The book is intended primarily for researchers and advanced-level students in the fields of developmental and personality psychology, as well as those in family studies and in gerontology. It may also be of interest to those in the helping professions who are concerned with family therapy and family issues, and may--due to its content and illustrative material--have appeal to a wider market of the lay public. The chapters are written in a readily accessible style and the analyses are presented in a fairly non-technical way. Because family stories are charted across the lifespan, it would be a suitable companion book to a more traditional lifespan textbook in certain courses.

Life Story Research In Sport written by Kitrina Douglas and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-17 with Sports & Recreation categories.

What is life really like for the elite athlete? How does the experience of being a professional sports person differ from the popular perceptions of fans, journalists or academics? Why might elite sports people experience mental health difficulties away from the public gaze? In the first book-length study of its kind, Kitrina Douglas and David Carless present the life stories of real elite athletes alongside careful analysis and interpretation of those stories in order to better understand the experience of living in sport. Drawing on psychology, sociology, counselling, psychotherapy and narrative theory, and on narrative research in sports as diverse as golf, track and field athletics, judo and hockey, they explore the ways in which the culture of sport interacts with the mental health, development, identity and life trajectories of elite and professional sports people in highly pressurised and sometimes unhealthy environments. By casting light on a previously under-researched aspect of sport, the book makes a call for strategies to be put in place to minimise difficulties or distress for athletes, for support to be tailored across the different life phases, and highlights the potential benefits in terms of athlete well-being and improved performance. The book also considers how these important issues relate to broader cultural and social factors, and therefore represents important reading for any student or professional with an interest in sport psychology, coaching, sport sociology, youth sport, counselling, or exercise and mental health.

LIFE'S EXPERIENCES through a REFLECTIVE LENS: More than 50 heart-warming stories and expositions to challenge you and lift you up spiritually It is difficult to successfully go through life without being a critical thinker. Without deep thought one is prone to repeating mistakes without learning lessons. You are likely to grope for the handle while the door is open! If you seldom think deeply you will miss obvious opportunities and blame the guiltless! In fact, we often blame God for our blunders because we seldom reflect. Life is a journey and the nature of the path varies at different points. Sometimes the path is bumpy; at other times, it is thorny or crooked. We may meet lions and bears along the way. We seldom quit the journey though we are often discouraged. We keep travelling with the destination constantly on our minds. No matter how rugged the road may be, the thought that we will someday arrive at home keeps us going. We meet and greet other pilgrims, offer helping hands to the discouraged on the way and refreshment to the road-weary where we can. We observe the flowers, and smell the petals and the earth as the first drops of rain arrive in due season. At the end of every journey, we are often left with great stories to tell and, if we were good observers, we are invariably richer at the end of the journey than when we first set out. In 'Life's Experiences through a Reflective Lens' I invite you to come on a journey with me. Here you will find stories to challenge you, warm your heart, and spiritually uplift you. I believe that our lives are stories being played out under the watchful eyes of the benevolent Great Author (God). As we mature, He invites us to co-author our life's stories with Him. Those who accept this invitation continue to tell this story through the filter of the lens of God's Words. God walks with us every day, guides us through thick and thin, through deserts, parched lands, hills and valleys, war and peace, joy and overwhelming sadness; yet in those trials and amid storms God never leaves us. He continues to open our eyes and helps us understand how the pieces of the puzzle fit into the larger picture. He allows everything that happens in our lives and sets the timing of the events. He cushions us and lifts us to a closer relationship with Him each time we overcome or even falter. He continues to write the story of our lives and invites us to be active participants. Please come with me! Let's peep into some of the places God has taken me and I will share what He has taught me. Laugh if you must, a little humor can heal the heart; after all Proverbs 17:27 affirms that a cheerful heart is good medicine. Shed a tear or two if you want to but never forget the lesson behind every story. Trust me! Your mind will be opened at the end of each story and you will likely become a keener observer of God's interaction with you in everyday life! Never again will you go through life's experiences or the Scriptures without learning the lessons they mean to teach you.

Thus it was that as I rocked my little baby to sleep, I often wondered what I should give her: a mind conditioned towards the accepted societal concept of God, or a blank mind that would make its own opinions once older.' One of the major concerns of Indian parents is how best to pass on to their children the time-honoured traditions of Indian culture and spirituality, even as they try to raise global citizens. Visa, Stickers and Other Matters of the Soul is a delightful and endearing account of a young mother's experiments with raising her daughter in the Indian spiritual way while living in atheist China. As she begins to educate her daughter, she is surprised by her daughter's sense of understanding and realizes that parenting is her biggest life lesson, with her daughter as her teacher.
