Erik Grayson is Associate Professor of English at Northampton Community College, USA. Previously, he was Assistant Professor of English at Wartburg College, USA, and Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Luther College, USA. He has published essays on J.M. Coetzee, Walter M. Miller, Jr., Don DeLillo, and Jamaica Kincaid, among others. Maren Scheurer is Researcher and Lecturer in the Department of Comparative Literature at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany. She is the author of Transferences: The Aesthetics and Poetics of the Therapeutic Relationship (2019) and co-editor, with Susan Bainbrigge, of Narratives of the Therapeutic Encounter: Psychoanalysis, Talking Therapies and Creative Practice (2020). With Aimee Pozorski, she serves as executive co-editor of Philip Roth Studies.

The protagonist of Herta Muller's Traveling on One Leg is Irene, a fragile woman born to a German family in Romania, who has recently emigrated from Romania to Germany. The novel focuses on Irene's relationship with three men: Franz, whom she met in Romania and who was unwilling to respond to her love for him; Stefan, a friend of Franz's; and Thomas, a bisexual bookseller in perpetual crisis. Despite being born to a German family, Irene's place in Germany is as a recent emigre and an unassimilated Romanian German. She feels neither longing for Romania nor any comfort in her newly adopted Germany. Politically and socially isolated, Irene moves within the emotional orbit of these three men, while at the same time moving between West Berlin, Marburg, and Frankfurt, taking a dissonant journey within strange yet familiar territory. This open access book investigates imaginaries of artificial limbs, eyes, hair, and teeth in British and American literary and cultural sources from the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Prosthetic Body Parts in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture shows how depictions of prostheses complicated the contemporary bodily status quo, which increasingly demanded an appearance of physical wholeness. Revealing how representations of the prostheticized body were inflected significantly by factors such as social class, gender, and age, Prosthetic Body Parts in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture argues that nineteenth-century prosthesis narratives, though presented in a predominantly ableist and sometimes disablist manner, challenged the dominance of physical completeness as they questioned the logic of prostheticization or presented non-normative subjects in threateningly powerful ways. Considering texts by authors including Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, and Arthur Conan Doyle alongside various cultural, medical, and commercial materials, this book provides an important reappraisal of historical attitudes to not only prostheses but also concepts of physical normalcy and difference.

The aim of this book is to present as completely as possible a description of the joints of the human limbs, using photographs and drawings of anatomical dissections. Existing descriptive anatomical accounts are often theoretical and not linked to functional activity of the joints concerned; they lack practical demonstra tion of the anatomy. We hope to fill the gap in the available literature by presentation of this book. The work is directed towards anatomists, doctors interested in joint pathology, orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, radiologists, specialists in sport injuries and rehabilitation, also to physicians in general, physiotherapists and students. The book is divided into seven chapters. Each chapter comprises two parts: the first is a brief account of the functional anatomy of the joint. It does not offer a complete description but an overall summary of the functional structures involved. The second section, the main part, includes illustrations (drawings and photographs of anatomical dissections). The dissections and the photographs were prepared in the Department of Anatomy directed by Professor HENRI M. DUVERNaY from cadaveric specimens preserved by the method described by WINCKLER (1964). The process of dissecting the ligamentous structures around joints has proved techni cally difficult. It is easy to create artificially structures from the mass of fibrous tissue and on a number of occasions we have been unable to locate ligaments which are described in some anatomical accounts.
