While the very existence of global literary studies as an institutionalised field is not yet fully established, the global turn in various disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences has been gaining traction in recent years. This book aims to contribute to the field of global literary studies with a more inclusive and decentralising approach. Specifically, it responds to a double demand: the need for expanding openness to other ways of seeing the global literary space by including multiple literary and cultural traditions and other interdisciplinary perspectives in the discussion, and the need for conceptual models and different case studies that will help develop a global approach in four key avenues of research: global translation flows and translation policies, the post-1989 novel as a global form, global literary environments, and a global perspective on film and cinema history. Gathering contributions from international scholars with expertise in various areas of research, the volume is structured around five target concepts: space, scale, time, connectivity, and agency. We also take gender and LGBTQ+ perspectives, as well as a digital approach.

A thoroughly researched and documented study of Catalan literature under the Franco regime, focussed on several key post-Civil War novels and their authors. During the 1950s and 1960s, several key Catalan authors set about rewriting some of their narrative work despite the obstacles to publication in Catalan under the Franco regime. This study describes the social, political and cultural conditions that impelled Salvador Espriu, Xavier Benguerel, Sebastià Juan Arbó and Joan Sales to revise Laia, El testament, Tino Costa and Incerta glòria, concentrating particularly on the linguistic debates and literary trends from the 1950s to the early 1970s. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical perspectives, this book examines the reasons for the rewriting, including censorship and self-censorship, generational and ideological changes within the Catalan literary field, controversies over linguistic purism, the appearance of new literary trends and gender and political issues. It focuses on the (re)construction of a distinctive national identity and the impact of repression, memory, exile and silence on the representation of the war and the post-war periods. This study explores not only how writers or society at large were affected by the dictatorship, but how the armed conflict left its mark on the writing process itself. Jordi Cornellà-Detrell is a Lecturer in Spanish in the School of Modern Languages at Bangor University.

Le-am cunoscut îns în elepciunea i frumuse ea lor sufleteasc . Telefoanele i scrisorile primite de la ace ti sensibili consumatori de art , le-am sim it ca pe ni te bucurii trec toare, dar deosebit de stimulatoare, în acele momente ale scrisului meu. Scriind toate acestea, nu vreau decât s aduc un omagiu no iunii de cititor, autor sau neautor, în eles deopotriv ca spirit însetat de Adev rul con inut în Lumina Cuno tin ei . Acestor iubitori ai luminii din cuvânt, le datorez cu prisosin rândurile de fa , pe care le voi întrerupe cu subtitluri inspirate din convorbiri i scrisori memorabile. C ci ce ar putea fi mai folositor pentru cei ce m citesc i pentru cei ce scriu, ca i mine, decât s le ofer o parte din bucuria bucuriei mele de a mai tr i? Au trecut mul i ani de când primesc i citesc literatur scris de exila i români de pe diferite meridiane ale planetei. Sunt profund impresionat de talentul multora dintre ace ti autori, ca i de valoarea scrierilor ce le semneaz , multe dintre ele fiind publicate în regie proprie, deci prin eforturi de renun are la priorit i de ordin personal i ignorând riscul de a nu fi recenza i la vreme, de critica literar . Iat de ce mi-am f cut eu însumi o misiune din a aduce, într'un timp cât mai scurt, asemenea autori, în aten ia publicului cititor de aici i din ar . O asemenea lucrare a avut ca efect imediat, o mai mare fluen a scrisorilor ce le-am primit. Insemn rile din aceast carte sunt rezultatul unui proiect mai vechi, cuprinzând idei de interes general, ce ar putea interesa un public mai larg, doritor s cunoasc ceva despre preocup rile spirituale din comunitatea româno-american i di alte comunit i române ti din lume.

Silvia Roig explores the narrative of Aurora Bertrana (1892-1974), an unknown writer today, but a successful and recognized female author in Catalonia and Spain during the 20th century. Aurora Bertrana's works are almost never mentioned in manuals of literature. Her rich, intellectual work has not received the attention it deserves, relegated almost to absolute oblivion. The author reviews and studies twenty-four of Bertrana's novels written in Catalan andSpanish, including: Ariatea (1960), El pomell de les violes (MS), L'inefable Philip (MS), La aldea sin hombres (mn.), La madrecita de los cerdos (MS), Entre dos silencis (1958), La ninfa d'argila (1959), Fracàs (1966) and La ciutat dels joves: reportatge fantasia (1971). She studies her work, published and unpublished, from a feminist approach, taking into account the intellectual history of Spain and Catalonia. Bertana's strong commitment to social issues reveals her association with the Modernist and Noucentists trends of her time. Bertrana's novels reveal a unique interest in non-Western cultures and lifestyles and her work undertakes controversial topics and socio-cultural issues, while she observes and draws special attention to the situation of women in different circumstances and cultural geographies. This book is therefore anchored on interpretive and theoretical parameters that intersect with consideration of gender, such as travel-and-gender and war-and-gender. Roig uses the work of feminists such as Simone De Beauvoir, Shulamith Firestone, Jelke Boesten, Margaret and Patrice Higonnet, Michelle Zimbalist Rosaldo and Julia Kristeva to help assess Bertrana's engagement with gender and socio-political issues. This approach is particularly well suited for a writer like Bertrana, a Catalan and Republican intellectual woman forced into self-exile during the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. A History of Catalan Folk Literature is the fruit of a collaborative effort between fifteen researchers from various universities and research centres who have joined forces to create a broader study of Catalan folk literature that addresses the Catalan linguistic and cultural territories in their entirety. Since the thirteenth century, Catalan culture has created a rich and abundant literary legacy, and since the mid-nineteenth century this has been complemented by a tradition of folklore studies that remains very much alive today. Within this comparatively recent discipline, folk literature has played a particularly important role. The book presents the evolution of Catalan folk literature studies in each of the areas that make up the Catalan linguistic and cultural territories referred to above. The period considered stretches from the mid-nineteenth century, when the beginnings of a scientific interest in folklore emerged across Europe, to the present day.
