This is an upper-level introduction to the German Reformer Martin Luther, who by his thought and action started the Reformation movement. Martin Luther was one of the most influential and important figures of the second millennium. His break with Rome and the development of separate Evangelical churches affected not just the religious life of Europe but also social and political landscapes as well. More books have been written about Luther than nearly any other historical figure. Despite all these books, Luther remains an enigmatic figure. This book proposes to examine a number of key moments in Luther's life and fundamental theological positions that remain perplexing to most students. This book will also present an introduction to the primary sources available to a student and important secondary works that ought to be consulted. The Guides for the Perplexed series are clear, concise and accessible introductions to thinkers, writers and subjects that students and readers can find especially challenging - or indeed downright bewildering. Concentrating specifically on what it is that makes the subject difficult to grasp, these books explain and explore key themes and ideas, guiding the reader towards a thorough understanding of demanding material.

About this Volume "Upon reflection, it is obvious that a preface by Martin Luther would be a much sought-after addition to any volume coming out of his wing of the Reformation. Fortunately, not only for the authors who merited one of these paratexts, but for modern scholars as well, the reformer did take on the mantle of a 'writer of prefaces.' The results, collected in volumes 59 and 60 of Luther's Works, are strongly recommended reading for Reformation scholars, especially for those interested in his thoughts, activities, and acquaintances as well as his reading list during the quarter century after the Diet of Worms (1521), as he and many for whom he wrote prefaces were engaged in building the Lutheran church." -Andrew Villalon, in Sixteenth Century Journal 44, no. 3 (2013): 849. Never before in English, this volume presents Luther's prefaces from 1520-32 for the writings of both colleagues and opponents. In Luther's day, the preface was sometimes the most important part of the book. The preface used the most beautiful of language to praise the author, his work, and his arguments-and to decry his opponents. Publishers knew that having Luther's preface brought instant fame to any book. Some of Luther's prefaces are short, witty, and incisive; others are as long as treatises, with thorough discussions of important theology. Satirical, earnest, tender, combative-in his prefaces Luther is all these things. Over and over, Luther calls his readers to remember why the Reformation was needed, and not to take it for granted. About the Series The twenty planned new volumes are intended to reflect both modern and sixteenth-century interests and to expand the coverage of genres underrepresented in the existing volumes, such as Luther's sermons and disputations. The primary basis for the translation is the comprehensive Weimar edition.

Martin Luther (1483 1546), the great German Church reformer, is often erroneously seen as someone who suddenly made a complete break with Catholicism and started his own denomination. Nothing could be further from the truth. Rather than intending to break with Catholicism, Luther sought to purge the Church from what he rightly as more recent research has acknowledged saw as abuses, above all the sale of indulgences as if one could buy one s way into heaven. The Catholic Luther presents seven writings by Luther that demonstrate his deep Catholicity. The Magnificat Put into German and Explained displays his (lifelong) devotion to the Virgin Mary; the Sermon at Coburg shows how he continued to value the devotion to the saints for evangelical purposes; and the treatise on the Lord's Supper from 1519 demonstrates Luther s nonpolemical and rich eucharistic piety in particular and a sacramental piety in general. Another eucharistic text, one each on the sacraments of baptism and of penance, and a sermon on preparing to die round out the collection. Prominent Luther scholars Philip Krey and Peter Krey offer an extensive introduction to this aspect of Luther s work along with brief introductions to each of Luther s texts. For Catholics and Protestants alike who are interested in coming to know this little known and genuinely appealing side of Martin Luther, The Catholic Luther is an indispensable resource.

A Year With Luther written by Athina Lexutt and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Lutheran Church categories.

A daily Luther breviary for pastors and laity, for use in college, seminary, and university, and for reading at home; the book is suitable for Christian believers, inquirers, as well as for those interested in studying Reformation history. Martin Luther did not bequeath to us a system of theological thought, but his sermons, poetry, letters, and essays are all written with specific situations in mind. This book takes the same approach in dealing with topics. Twelve topics, spread over the months of the year, introduce the reader to Luther's theology. The selected readings from the Wittenberg reformer are translated into modern English and explained in everyday language. The passages from his writings have been selected with an eye to the Christian year and its festivals; at the same time they describe the nature and consequences of Luther's reformational insights. With the added benefit of a commentary on the selected Luther texts as well as on the art work for each month, this book promises to be not only a helpful and entertaining companion for the journey through the church year, but also a compendium of Luther's theology.

About this Volume This volume contains a selection of Luther's preaching between May 1531 and June 1539. In the first few years after the decisive Diet of Augsburg (1530) and the presentation of the Augsburg Confession, Luther grappled with how best to teach the doctrine of justification. Sermons dealing with Christian righteousness and the proper distinction of Law and Gospel show how Luther was gradually formulating this theme in a way that could be understood by Christians for generations to come. Luther's preaching during these years also addressed Baptism, ordination to the preaching office, marriage, Christ's return, the end of the world, the confession of the Trinity in the creeds, and the person of Christ. These topics reflect, in part, the circumstances of the Evangelical church in the decade after the Augsburg Confession-and its rejection by the papal church-as Luther and his colleagues sought to defend the Gospel and to define its consequences worked out in the life of the church and of individual Christians. The selection of sermons also reflects the interests of Luther's contemporaries and his students of the next generation: included here are most of the sermons from these years that found their way into the press during Luther's lifetime or posthumously before the end of the century. Luther's sermons in this volume make clear that Christian doctrine is not just for the classroom and textbook, but also and especially for the hearing, admonition, and consolation of all Christians. About the Series The 28 planned volumes are intended to reflect both modern and sixteenth-century interests and to expand the coverage of genres underrepresented in the existing volumes of Luther's Works, such as Luther's sermons and disputations. The primary basis for the translation is the comprehensive Weimar edition.

Theology Of The Reformers written by Timothy George and has been published by B&H Publishing Group this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-01 with Religion categories.

First released in 1988, this 25th Anniversary Edition of Timothy George’s Theology of the Reformers includes a new chapter and bibliography on William Tyndale, the reformer who courageously stood at the headwaters of the English Reformation. Also included are expanded opening and concluding chapters and updated bibliographies on each reformer. Theology of the Reformers articulates the theological self-understanding of five principal figures from the period of the Reformation: Martin Luther, Huldrych Zwingli, John Calvin, Menno Simons, and William Tyndale. George establishes the context for their work by describing the spiritual climate of their time. Then he profiles each reformer, providing a picture of their theology that does justice to the scope of their involvement in the reforming effort. George details the valuable contributions these men made to issues historically considered pillars of the Christian faith: Scripture, Jesus Christ, salvation, the church, and last things. The intent is not just to document the theology of these reformers, but also to help the church of today better understand and more faithfully live its calling as followers of the one true God. Through and through, George’s work provides a truly integrated and comprehensive picture of Christian theology at the time of the Reformation.
