Jean-Louis Comolli's six-part essay Technique and Ideologyhad a revolutionary effect on film theory and history when it first appeared in Cahiers du Cinéma in 1971. In 2009, Comolli revisited his earlier text, arguing that the present age, marked by the total dominance of media-filtered spectacle over image production, makes the need for an 'emancipated, critical spectator' more pressing than ever. In this volume, Daniel Fairfax presents annotated translations of these two texts to provide an overview of Comolli's activity as both a theorist and a filmmaker.

The Bakhtin Circle written by Craig Brandist and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-06-26 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The Russian philosopher and cultural theorist Mikhail Bakhtin has traditionally been seen as the leading figure in the group of intellectuals known as the Bakhtin Circle. The writings of other members of the Circle are considered much less important than his work, while Bakhtin's achievement has been exaggerated in proportion to the downgrading of the thinkers with whom he associated in the 1920s. This volume, which includes new translations and studies of the work of the most important members of the Circle, sets out to correct the distortions in the established representations of its activity. The original contributions to literary and linguistic theory made by Valentin Voloshinov and Pavel Medvedev (but frequently credited to Bakhtin) are assessed, and the distinctiveness of their approaches is highlighted.

Nominal Compound Acquisition written by Wolfgang U. Dressler and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-15 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book offers a systematic study of the emergence and early development of compound nouns in first language acquisition from a cross-linguistic and typological perspective. The language sample is both genealogically and typologically diversified, ranging from languages rich in compounds, such as German, Saami, Estonian and Finnish, to languages poor in compounds, such as French. Some of them differ in compound richness according to genres of adult-directed speech in contrast to child-directed speech and thus also child speech, like Russian, Lithuanian and especially Greek. Differences in the delimitation and transition between compounds and phrases and in the distribution of subtypes of compounds in these languages involve great typological variety and thus different tasks for children acquiring them. The eleven languages investigated in the volume and the common methodology of longitudinal collection of spontaneous speech data concerning the interaction between children and their caretakers or peers, supplemented by lexical typology as a new means of cross-linguistic comparison of language acquisition, allow new generalizations and make the volume a unique contribution.

Principles Of Historical Linguistics written by Hans Henrich Hock and has been published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-25 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Historical linguistic theory and practice consist of a large number of chronological "layers" that have been accepted in the course of time and have acquired a permanence of their own. These range from neogrammarian conceptualizations of sound change, analogy, and borrowing, to prosodic, lexical, morphological, and syntactic change, and to present-day views on rule change and the effects of language contact. To get a full grasp of the principles of historical linguistics it is therefore necessary to understand the nature of each of these "layers". This book is a major revision and reorganization of the earlier editions and adds entirely new chapters on morphological change and lexical change, as well as a detailed discussion of linguistic palaeontology and ideological responses to the findings of historical linguistics to this landmark publication.

Originally published in 1964, this book examines where and how the pattern and texture of speech emerged and whether language is logical. It looks at linguistics from both the historical and descriptive points of view, as a physical science and as a social science. It also discusses the problem of aesthetics in language and what happens when different languages come into contact with each other. The book concludes with a discussion of the possibility of an international language, and indeed whether such a development would be progress or something that is needed or wanted.

Privy Portrait written by Jean-Luc Benoziglio and has been published by French List this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Fiction categories.

Abandoned by his wife and young daughter, without work or prospects and blind in one eye, the narrator of Privy Portrait moves into a minuscule apartment with his only inheritance--a 25-volume encyclopedia, which becomes a cause of war between him and his vulgar, narrow-minded, racist and authoritarian neighbours, the Shritzkys. Because he has no space for the encyclopedia in his room, he stores it in the communal toilet. It is also the only place he can find refuge from his neighbours’ blaring television and barricades himself in it to read his encyclopedia, much to the distress of all the residents of the building. Amusing as it is devastating, Privy Portrait is the monologue of a man, disoriented by a gaping void--his father never spoke to him of his origins--suffering probably from cancer, recounting the final foundering of his own sanity and his life. In this buffoonish, even grotesque, yet profoundly pitiful man and through his voice--a blend of disappointed idealism, dark humour and vulnerability--Jean-Luc Benoziglio explores weighty themes with slyness and a light touch without ever sacrificing their gravity: the roles of family, history and memory in one’s interior life, one’s moral responsibility towards others, the Holocaust observed from a position of safety and, above all, the fragility of personal identity.
