"Liberalism" is widely used to describe a variety of social and political ideas, but has been an especially difficult concept for historians and political scientists to define. Burckhardt, Mill, and Tocqueville define one type of liberal thought. They share an aristocratic liberalism marked by distaste for the masses and the middle class, opposition to the commercial spirit, fear and contempt of mediocrity, and suspicion of the centralized state. Their fears are combined with an elevated ideal of human personality, an ideal which affirms modernity. All see their ideals threatened in the immediate future, and all hope to save European civilization from barbarism and militarism through some form of education, although all grow more pessimistic towards the end of their lives. Aristocratic Liberalism ignores the national boundaries that so often confine the history of political thought, and uses the perspective thus gained to establish a pan-European type of political thought. Going beyond Burckhardt, Mill, and Tocqueville, Aristocratic Liberalism argues for new ways of looking at nineteenth-century liberalism. It corrects many prevalent misconceptions about liberalism, and suggests new paths for arriving at a better understanding of the leading form of nineteenth-century political thought. The new Afterword by the author presents a novel description of liberal political language as the "discourse of capacity," and suggests that this kind of language is the common denominator of all forms of European liberalism in the nineteenth century. Aristocratic Liberalism will be valuable to students of history, political science, sociology, and political philosophy.

Excerpt from Mademoiselle De La Seigliere: Comedie To understand the character of the Marquis de la Seigliere we must remember that before the Revolution the French nobility were a caste further removed from the national life, and less in sympathy with the suffering millions, than perhaps any privileged class in Europe. Their immunity from taxes, the numerous highly paid sinecures they held about the court, and want of equality before the law, had created, as Mme. De Stael says, a nation within a nation. They treated the people as little better than animals created to toil and labour for their benefit, and do not seem to have suspected that their position carried with it certain duties as well as privileges. Consequently they looked on the beginning of the French Revolution as but a revolt of vassals, from whom they had a right to exact absolute obedience. After Louis XVI. 's attem ted escape, and the signing of the Constitution, numbers of the no ility, headed by Le Comte d'artois (afterwards Charles X.) and other members of the royal family, left the country to solicit the help of foreign powers. Indiana is the story's heroine, a young noblewoman descended from French colonial settlers from Île Bourbon who lives in France. Indiana is married to an older ex-army officer named Colonel Delmare and suffers from the lack of passion in her life. Indiana does not love Delmare and searches for someone who will love her passionately. Her cousin Ralph is in love with her, but she overlooks him and falls in love with their well-spoken neighbor, Raymon de Ramiere. Indiana escapes the house to faithfully present herself in Raymon's apartments in the middle of the night, but they don't get along and Colonel Delmare takes Indiana to Île Bourbon. Indiana returns to France on a perilous sea journey during the French Revolution of 1830, where she reconnects with Raymon, but also with Ralph, which further complicate matters. The novel is an exploration of nineteenth-century female desire complicated by class constraints and by social codes about infidelity.

A Handbook On Good Manners For Children written by Erasmus and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-30 with Education categories.

When did you last tell your children to put their hand over their mouth when they yawn? When did you last suggest that when they are introduced to someone they should shake hands firmly and look them in the eye? Do you suggest that they should wait until everyone is served before they eat rather than hoover up the best bit for themselves? Do you demand that your young daughter dress decorously lest she elicit outraged looks? Do you think that the children of today have disgraceful manners? Unlike, of course, when you were young ... Well, that's certainly what Erasmus of Rotterdam thought in 1530 when he published De Civilitate Morum Puerilium: A Handbook on Good Manners for Children. He felt that learning good manners was crucial to a child's upbringing, and that the uncouth and ill-disciplined behaviour around him demanded a new kind of book. After all, as William of Wykeham memorably said in the 1350s, 'Manners maketh man'. A Handbook on Good Manners for Children is considered to be the first treatise in Western Europe on the moral and practical education of children. It was a massive bestseller - indeed the biggest-selling book of the sixteenth century - going into 130 editions over 300 years and being translated into 22 languages within ten years of its publication. In it, Erasmus concerns himself with matters such as how to dress, how to behave at table, how to converse with one's elders and contemporaries, how to address the opposite sex and much else. For example: Table Manners 'It's just as rude to lick greasy fingers as it is to wipe them on your clothing, Use a cloth or napkin instead.' 'Some people, no sooner than they've sat down, immediately stick their hands into the dishes of food. This is the manner of wolves.' 'Making a raucous noise or shrieking intentionally when you sneeze, or showing off by carrying on sneezing on purpose, is very ill-mannered.' 'To fidget around in your seat, and to settle first on one buttock and then the next, gives the impression that you are repeatedly farting, or trying to fart.' The advice is as relevant today as it was 500 years ago.
