The concept of »postmigration« has recently gained importance in the context of European societies' obsession with migration and integration along with emerging new forms of exclusion and nationalisms. This book introduces ongoing debates on the developing concept of »postmigration« and how it can be applied to arts and culture. While the concept has mainly gained traction in the cultural scene in Berlin, Germany, the contributions expand the field of study by attending to cultural expressions in literature, theatre, film, and art across various European societies, such as the United Kingdom, France, Finland, Denmark, and Germany. By doing so, the contributions highlight this concept's potential and show how it can offer new perspectives on transformations caused by migration.

Creoles are new languages. We know when they emerged. Documentary sources of their early stages are therefore crucial for finding out how they emerged. However, the authenticity of these sources should be looked at critically. Virgin Islands Dutch Creole did not exist before 1672 and was mentioned for the first time in 1736. In the following decades Moravian and Lutheran missionaries started a tradition of translating Christian texts into this new language of the Danish Antilles (US Virgin Islands). On the surface of it, these texts look bookish, influenced by missionary jargon, Dutch-like, and perhaps even artificial. This dissertation studies the authenticity of Virgin Islands Dutch Creole texts from a philological perspective.

From his days as a precocious youngster in Lomzha to his service as rabbi of Belfast and Dublin, chief rabbi of the Irish Free State, and then chief rabbi of Mandate Palestine and finally Israel, Rabbi Yitzhak Isaac HaLevi Herzog blazed trails all his life. With a doctorate in literature by age twenty-five as well as degrees in classical and modern languages and mathematics, Rabbi Herzog was fully equipped with the education of the modern secular world as well as a deep immersion in Torah. All of these tools, together with his loving yet uncompromising Jewish faith, were brought to bear throughout a lifetime of leadership that traversed stormy days indeed. World War I, World War II, and the struggle of the fledgling Jewish state for independence made for constant challenges that the rabbi negotiated with grace and wisdom. Throughout his tireless activism lobbying presidents and popes on behalf of Holocaust refugees and then the nascent Jewish state, Rabbi Herzog wrote prolifically on topics in Jewish law in numerous books and papers that are still authoritative today. The rabbis life is a model of the struggle for balance between religious faith and modernity, a path that he navigated with a steadiness and warmth that made him both revered and beloved, in his day and into the present. First published in Hebrew, this portrait of the life of one of modern Judaisms most prominent figures is now available for the first time in English and will introduce the rabbi to a new generation as a model of a person of faith fully participating in modernity.

Socio Onomastics written by Terhi Ainiala and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-09 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The volume seeks to establish socio-onomastics as a field of linguistic inquiry not only within sociolinguistics, but also, and in particular, within pragmatics. The linguistic study of names has a very long history, but also a history sometimes fraught with skepticism, and thus often neglected by linguists in other fields. The volume takes on the challenge of instituting onomastic study into linguistics and pragmatics by focusing on recent trends within socio-onomastics, interactional onomastics, contact onomastics, folk onomastics, and linguistic landscape studies. The volume is an introduction to these fields – with the introductory chapter giving an overview of, and an update on, recent onomastic study – and in addition offers detailed in-depth analyses of place names, person names, street names and commercial names from different perspectives: historically, as well as from the point of view of the impact of globalization and glocalization. All the chapters focus on the use and function of names and naming, on changes in name usage, and on the reasons for, processes in, and results of names in contact.
