Unlike European countries where the consolidation of town planning was based on legislative reforms, Latin America’s urbanismo mainly stemmed from urban plans for national capitals and metropolises. Austrian academic and planner Karl Brunner was hired in Chile, Colombia and Panama from the late 1920s to advise in the professional and academic domains, marking a shift from the so-called École Française d’Urbanisme (EFU) of Haussmannesque descent towards the Austrian-German Städtebau, While coordinating the municipal office and plan for Bogotá, Brunner translated his Manual de Urbanismo – the first textbook published in Latin America about the new discipline and the first to incorporate examples from local cities. Based on his 1924 course at Vienna’s National Faculty of Architecture Brunner’s Manual emphasized the ‘scientific system’ of the discipline. Brunner was the most influential figure of his time in the urban planning of the region, but has become overshadowed by Le Corbusier's and CIAM’s prevailing influence after the Second World War. Complete with a supporting introduction written by Arturo Almandoz, this volume includes the full copy of the original Manual de Urbanismo with an English translation of the synthesis. In Brazilian Propaganda, Nina Schneider examines the various modes of official, and unofficial, propaganda used by an authoritarian regime. Such propaganda is commonly believed to be political, praising military figures and openly legitimizing state repression. However, Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-1985) launched seemingly apolitical official campaigns that were aesthetically appealing and ostensibly aimed to "enlighten" and "civilize." Some were produced as civilian-military collaborations and others were conducted by privately owned media, but undergirding them all was the theme of a country aspiring to become a developed nation. Focusing primarily on visual media, Schneider demonstrates how many short films of the period portrayed a society free from class and racial conflicts. These films espoused civic-mindedness while attempting to distract from atrocities perpetuated by the regime. Mining a rich trove of materials from the National Archives in Rio and conducting interviews with key propagandists, Schneider demonstrates the ambiguities of twentieth-century Brazilian propaganda. She also challenges the notion of a homogeneous military regime in Brazil, highlighting its fractures and competing forces. By analyzing the strategy, production, mechanisms, and meaning of these films and reconstructing their effects, she provides an alternative interpretation of the propagandists' intentions and a new framework for understanding this era in Brazil's history.

A Amazônia é o pulmão do planeta. O Brasil é o país do futuro. Estes são dois clichês que “viralizaram” em uma época muito anterior à popularização das redes sociais, da internet e dos computadores pessoais. E, como a maioria dos “virais” de hoje em dia, são falsos. A Amazônia nunca foi o “pulmão” do planeta. Mesmo porque pulmão é um órgão que consome oxigênio, e não o produz, como o fitoplâncton. O Brasil nunca foi o país do futuro. Como todos os países do mundo, somos o país do presente. E se nós, humanos, quisermos ter alguma chance de futuro é importante e urgente descermos do ônibus em que estamos todos embarcados rumando aceleradamente em direção ao precipício do apocalipse ecológico e tomarmos outro ônibus no sentido oposto. As Ciências já estão tocando as trombetas há algumas décadas e o fôlego está cada vez mais curto. A proposta deste livro é trazer uma reflexão crítica sobre as propagandas ambientais e seu impacto sobre a percepção da sociedade a respeito da crise ambiental ora em curso. A relação da publicidade com a cultura é de mão dupla: ao mesmo tempo em que consegue capturar e representar de forma artística nosso Zeitgeist, também produz e reproduz efeitos sobre a sociedade, a cultura e a política. Afinal, “tempo é dinheiro, “diamantes são para sempre” e “o negócio é levar vantagem em tudo, certo?”. E se ainda houver dúvidas, basta perguntar “no Posto Ipiranga”. Publicidade, propaganda e outras formas de comunicação social podem ser excelentes meios para despertar consciências, informar, educar e promover a ação coletiva. É o caso das campanhas a favor da vacinação e contrárias ao tabagismo, do incentivo ao uso do cinto de segurança e à redução no consumo de água e energia. Mas também podem ser instrumento de desinformação, alienação e consumismo. Lançado em 2021, o filme “Não olhe para cima”, do diretor Adam McKay, traz uma sátira sobre o negacionismo científico e a alienação promovidos por políticos e organizações inescrupulosas. Também fez um alerta sobre a importância da responsabilidade e da mobilização coletivas no enfrentamento às crises sistêmicas. De fato, é importante que as pessoas comecem a olhar “para cima”, para além dos discursos comerciais das propagandas e do bom-mocismo corporativo para enxergarem o drama da situação atual. Este livro é fruto de minha pesquisa de mestrado no programa de Mudanças Sociais e Participação Política, oferecido pela Escola de Artes, Ciências e Humanidades da Universidade de São Paulo (EACH / USP), sob orientação do Prof. Marcos Bernardino de Carvalho, defendida em 2013 (PAGOTTO, 2013). Foram quase 3 anos de pesquisa, ao longo dos quais analisei centenas de propagandas e artigos científicos sobre o tema. As principais contribuições foram duas: primeiro, um diagnóstico amplo e detalhado sobre o greenwashing, e segundo, um modelo analítico, metateórico e conceitual que permite compreender melhor o fenômeno. A ideia de transformar a pesquisa em livro deve-se ao fato de que o interesse pelo tema parece ter aumentado desde então, uma tendência que não foi acompanhada pelo mercado editorial brasileiro. Minha percepção pessoal é que o greenwashing permanece um tema “quente”, despertando a curiosidade do público em geral, certa apreensão nos ambientes corporativos e que volta e meia retorna às páginas de veículos da imprensa, suscitando debates. Assim como a propaganda, o greenwashing é uma espécie de “polimorfo perverso”, que vem se transformando ao longo do tempo, e espera-se que continue se metamorfoseando no futuro, mas sua essência enganadora tem permanecido a mesma. Por este motivo, é importante que continue sendo pesquisado, compreendido e, sobretudo, desmascarado. A sociedade tem o direito de saber a dimensão da crise civilizatória em que está metida. Discursos vazios não são mais sustentáveis. O meio ambiente não acredita em propagandas. A natureza não pode ser enganada.
