In a developing country like Nigeria, the available land is plentiful but is relatively more expensive in city areas like Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt. Hence, to reduce cost, land outside the cities is often sought. In Nigeria, labor is cheap per hour, but it becomes more expensive as one moves toward the cities. Nevertheless, to reduce overall costs, transportation costs should be reduced, so the site of the factory should be close to a large market for its products. In developed countries, government policies influence significantly the locations of factories. For instance, factories are set up in high-unemployment areas to comply with the national development policy for the country. In Nigeria, the sitting of a factory is often based on political rather than management considerations. Therefore, many government-owned companies exist in economically nonviable locations, for example, the refinery and the fertilizer plant at Kaduna. However, private investors prefer to start companies in their own localities. Reliable electricity supplies and an adequate transportation infrastructure are essential for most companies. Unfortunately, in Nigeria, companies too often have to provide standby generators, thereby increasing production costs. This is one of the reasons why made in Nigeria goods tend to be more expensive than the corresponding imported ones, despite far lower local labor costs. This textbook which provides desirable service to students, engineers, managers and politicians covers an extensive range of topics that includes but not limited to essentials of management, optimal maintenance of equipment, financial management, cost/benefit analysis, creative thinking, entrepreneurship, operation research, queuing theory, the factory environment, depreciation replacement theory, marketing, automation and motivation.

Problems facing manufacturing clusters that intersect information technology, process management, and optimization within the Internet of Things (IoT) are examined in this book. Recent advances in information technology have transformed the use of resources and data exchange, often leading to management and optimization problems attributatble to technology limitations and strong market competition. This book discusses several problems and concepts which makes significant connections in the areas of information sharing, organization management, resource operations, and performance assessment. Geared toward practitioners and researchers, this treatment deepens the understanding between resource collaborative management and advanced information technology. Those in manufacturing will utilize the numerous mathematical models and methods offered to solve practical problems related to cutting stock, supply chain scheduling, and inventory management. Academics and students with a basic knowledge of manufacturing, combinatorics, and linear programming will find that this discussion widens the research area of resource collaborative management and unites the fields of information technology, manufacturing management, and optimization.

Manufacturing engineering department plays a very significant role in the manufacturing and operations functions. It conducts pre-production of newly designed products through potentially viable processes, and equipment functional system to derive the finished products that would meet product quality, production costs, and customer requirements. This book shows generously examples of facility, and production layouts, processes, methods, and materials flow to increase labor efficiency, and effectiveness of plant performance. It elaborates intensively the measurement methods of worker performance, machine utilization, and unproductive time. It emphasizes manufacturing problematic areas, avoidance of inefficiencies, and areas for improvement. This book also outlines quality control methods, business objective, strategy, and tactic methodology and implementation process, and decision theory and analysis. There are numerous illustrated examples, questions, problems, and solutions in each chapter to reinforce reader's comprehension of materials.

Industry 4.0 is changing how we manage operations to drive systems more intelligently. Technologies and applications are rapidly evolving. Disruptive technologies, such as artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing and digital twin, are shaking up different industries and have motivated us to revisit engineering and management tools for improving system design, efficiency, effectiveness, reliability, and responsiveness. While these emerging technologies have powered new applications, novel industrial engineering methodologies are required to achieve the goals. Industrial Engineering was sprouted from major engineering disciplines that called for better professional understanding of industrialization. Ever since, the discipline of Industrial Engineering has been the star role player in confronting emerging industries; be it manufacturing, service, high tech products, outer space technology, information technology, industrial policy, ergonomics, and now the world’s greatest concern, sustainable development. This book presents the state-of-the-art in industrial engineering research from different countries and cities around the globe. The book covers a wide range of topics in industrial engineering, including: Demand Chain Management, E-business / Information Technology, Evolutionary Algorithm, Green Manufacturing/Management, Health Care Systems and more.
