Studies that investigated students' attitudes toward mathematics and its relationships with achievement are scarce in Singapore. To address this issue, the mathematics attitudes and achievement of 984 junior college students were measured. Results indicated that students had positive attitudes toward mathematics but lacked intrinsic motivation to do mathematics. Students were extrinsically motivated to study mathematics, but the relationship between extrinsic motivation and achievement was weak. However, there was a significant positive correlation between intrinsic motivation and achievement. This is contrary to the beliefs of many educators and parents in Singapore who believe in extrinsic rewards and punishments to encourage better achievement. This study suggests that Singapore educators and parents should focus more on how to motivate students intrinsically. (Contains 1 figure and 1 table.) There have been a number of studies investigating how attitudes such as confidence and motivation affect students and their academic achievement. This study was conducted to identify specifically how fifth grade students' attitudes affect their achievement in mathematics. Gender was studied to determine its effect on attitude and achievement. Furthermore, various types of personality traits were studied including extroversion, conscientiousness, self-control, and intellectual efficiency to determine their effects on achievement. To gather the data a questionnaire including a Likert scale survey and a math test was administered. The results indicated that there is a significant relationship between attitudes toward and achievement in math. Concerning gender, males had a more positive attitude towards math compared to females, but both genders scored approximately the same on the achievement test. Finally, extroversion was the only trait to have a significant relationship with achievement, showing that students who were more extroverted scored higher on the test. These findings indicate that educators should be aware of students' attitudes and seek to improve them in order to positively influence students' academic achievement.--P. iv.

This book is essential reading in the sociology of education, social policy and mathematics education. It is for teachers, principals, superintendents, school leaders and policymakers. For too long, many children have not achieved their best potential in mathematics at both primary and secondary schools. Although scholarly interest in students' attitudes towards mathematics and achievement in mathematics has increased, there is scant research which explores the explanatory potential of Bourdieu's trilogy of habitus, cultural capital and social field in investigating students' attitudes towards mathematics. The content is based on a rich empirical study of 1106 students aged 14-16 and gives a detailed account drawing on both quantitative and qualitative data to show the intersection of social class, gender and ethnicity on students' aspiration, attitudes towards mathematics and mathematical achievement at GCSE in secondary schools in England.

The focus of this research was to compare students' and their parents' mathematical attitudes using the Attitudes Towards Mathematics Instrument (ATMI). The sample consisted of 476 newly-enrolled students and 263 parents attending the New Student Orientation and Leadership program at a private historically black university. The sample was predominantly African American, with 96% of the students and 95% of the parents identifying themselves as African American. The ATMI total score and subscale scores of self-confidence, value, enjoyment, and motivation were explored to determine if there was a relationship between the mathematics attitudes of students enrolled at a private historically black university and their parents'. Analysis was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between the students' mathematics academic achievement as demonstrated on the ACT/SAT by the mathematics subset score and their mathematics attitude. Additional analysis was conducted to determine if there was a relationship between students' mathematics academic achievement as demonstrated on the ACT/SAT by the mathematics subset score and their parents' mathematics attitude.

Too often, discussions about Mathematics express feelings of anguish and despair; and, indeed Mathematics results in general in South Africa can be described as dismal. The Department of Education (DoE) reported that in the 2010 National Senior Certificate examinations, 52.6% of learners obtained less than 30% in Mathematics and 69.1% of learners obtained less than 40% (DoE, 2010). This implies that a very small percentage of grade 12 learners would be eligible to further their studies in the fields of Mathematics and science at tertiary level. The findings of the research include the following: teachers play an important role in shaping learners attitudes toward Mathematics; learners are anxious when asked to solve mathematical problems; parents are very encouraging of their children learning Mathematics; the importance of Mathematics for future careers exerted a significant effect on mathematical achievement; and finally the various strategies that learners employ that positively impact on their achievement in mathematics include mastery experience, motivation, private tuition and peer group teaching-learning.

This study was motivated by the increased use of multi-media and individualized instruction in the classroom. The present study was designed to investigate any effect of mediated (non-print) and non-mediated (print) instruction on mathematics attitudes, mathematics achievement, and the attitude-achievement relationship. The investigation was carried out using both student-directed and teacher-directed learning situations. -- One hundred eighteen grade seven mathematics students from an elementary school were randomly assigned to four treatment groups; student-directed mediated, student-directed, teacher-directed mediated and teacher-directed. The students were given a mathematics attitude and mathematics achievement pretest. At the end of the study the students were given a mathematics attitude and mathematics achievement posttest. From this, a sample of 100, 25 from each group, was randomly selected for analysis purposes. The pretest scores were used as covariates for analysis. -- A comparison of the mean attitude and mean achievement scores for the four treatment groups showed no significant difference in attitudes or achievement for any of the treatments. -- Significant correlations between mathematics attitudes and achievement were found on the pretest scores for the teacher directed group, overall teacher-directed strategy, overall mediated strategy and overall non-mediated strategy. -- Using the posttest scores of attitudes and achievement, significant correlations were found for the student-directed mediated group, student-directed and teacher-directed strategies, and overall mediated and non-mediated strategies. -- An interpretation of these findings for the groups must consider the limitation of the short duration of the study. -- The study concluded with several implications for education and some suggestions for further research.
