The thoughts and theories of the artist Mathias Goeritz, one of the most interesting architects and artists of second half of century XX. He traveled to Mexico in 1949 where he remained until his death in 1990. In Mexico he developed an original and controversial art and theoretical work that was a precursor to minimal art and body art. He was involved in concrete poetry and constructed what now are emblematic pieces of architecture. The publication was designed to help celebrate teh 50th anniversary of his most noted architectural work, the "Torres de Satélite". Most of these texts were originally published in the journal "Arquitectura México", while the rest have been reprinted in other specialized publications or are inedited.

Los grandes maestros de la arquitectura han comprendido en ésta un arte mayor. Han pretendido, a través de ella emocionar, elevar el espíritu de quien la habita. El arquitecto mexicano Luis Barragán hace parte de ese selecto grupo que en la primera mitad siglo XX emprendió esa búsqueda. Su obra arquitectónica se ha asociado, a través de diversos análisis, a la utilización de los recursos de la arquitectura popular mexicana, como el color y el tratamiento de las superficies. En general se le endilga proponer una arquitectura austera y severa inspirada en la tradición. También el tratamiento de la luz ha sido un motivo de análisis recurrente. En menor medida los jardines también han sido causa de estudio en su obra. Elementos que conjugados hacen una evocación al silencio, al misterio, a la soledad. Esta investigación se ha servido de esas características y ahondado en ellas, para luego asociarlas a un propósito superior pretendido por Barragán: la arquitectura como arte que emociona, que eleva el espíritu, que le otorga al ser humano momentos de trascendencia. Se intuye acá que la búsqueda y proceso a lo largo de su vida, pretenden elevar la arquitectura a una condición superior de arte. Sublimarla.

Catálogo de la retrospectiva del escultor Mathias Goeritz, MNCARS. Un recorrido calidoscópico sobre la figura, la obra y las aportaciones teóricas del escultor mexicano de origen alemán Mathias Goeritz (Danzig, 1915 - México DF, 1990). La exposición retrospectiva MNCARS y el presente libro, con motivo del centenario de su nacimiento, se articulan alrededor del concepto de la arquitectura emocional, que formuló en 1954 y que convirtió en el eje teórico y estético de toda su obra a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. La obra escultórica de Goeritz y su trayectoria son una asunción del arte como un proyecto meta-artístico que desborda en el ámbito de lo social, lo político y lo público. The first major work in English on Mathias Goeritz (1915-1990), this book illuminates the artist's pivotal role within the landscape of twentieth-century modernism. Goeritz became recognized as an abstract sculptor after arriving in Mexico from Germany by way of Spain in 1949. His call to integrate abstract forms into civic and religious architecture, outlined in his "Emotional Architecture" manifesto, had a transformative impact on midcentury Mexican art and design. While best known for the experimental museum El Eco and his collaborations with the architect Luis Barrag n, including the brightly colored towers of Satellite City, Goeritz also shaped the Bauhaus-inspired curriculum at Guadalajara's School of Architecture and the iconic Cultural Program of Mexico City's 1968 Olympic Games. Josten addresses the Cold War implications of these and other initiatives that pitted Goeritz, an advocate of internationalist abstraction, against Diego Rivera and David Alfaro Siqueiros, ardent defenders of the realist style that prevailed in official Mexican art during the postrevolutionary period. Exploring Goeritz's dialogues with leading figures among the Parisian and New York avant-gardes, such as Yves Klein and Philip Johnson, Josten shows how Goeritz's approach to modernism, which was highly attuned to politics and place, formed part of a global enterprise.
