Szybów, przedwojenne żydowskie miasteczko. Meir Ezofowicz jest młodym idealistą. Sprzeciwia się zacofaniu otoczenia, religijnemu fanatyzmowi i prześladowaniu karaimów. Marzy o zdobyciu wykształcenia i co rusz swoim działaniem naraża się tradycyjnej społeczności żydowskiej. Jego postępowanie jest napiętnowane i wkrótce Meir poczuje konsekwencje głośnego wyrażania swoich poglądów. Orzeszkowa zrezygnowała z podziału charakteru postaci na czarne i białe, dodając im tym samym psychologicznej wiarygodności. Przedstawiła obraz zróżnicowanego wewnętrznie środowiska żydowskiego z II połowy XIX wieku. Powieść stanowi interesujące studium wyizolowanej społeczności, rządzącej się swoimi prawami. Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841-1910) – polska powieściopisarka, nowelistka, publicystka okresu pozytywizmu. Pisała pod pseudonimami: E.O., Bąk, Wa-Lit-No, Li...ka, Gabriela, Litwinka. Wiele miejsca we wczesnej twórczości zajmował problem emancypacji kobiet. Pierwsze utwory Orzeszkowej realizowały wzorzec powieści tendencyjnej i nie odznaczały się dużymi walorami artystycznymi. Kolejnym etapem twórczości pisarki był realizm. W rozprawie „O powieściach T.T. Jeża z rzutem oka na powieść w ogóle" przedstawiła założenia powieści realistycznej. Bogate obserwacje społeczne i przemyślenia na temat sytuacji człowieka w społeczeństwie znalazły odzwierciedlenie w jej największym dziele – „Nad Niemnem". Orzeszkowa była aktywna w środowisku literackim. Utrzymywała kontakty m.in. z Marią Konopnicką, z Leopoldem Méyetem i Zygmuntem Miłkowskim. W 1905 roku była nominowana do Nagrody Nobla, którą ostatecznie otrzymał Henryk Sienkiewicz.
