Als Beitrag zur Wiederentdeckung der materiellen Kultur in der Ethnologie stellt dieses Buch die Möglichkeiten und das Potential ethnologischer Forschung zu Objekten in der Vordergrund. Ziel ist es, ein theoretisches und analytisches Netzwerk zur holistischen Interpretation von Dingen herauszuarbeiten. Mit kritischem Blick auf verschiedene 'traditionelle' Ansätze zur Dinginterpretation wird eine Arbeitsdefinition für 'das Ding' erarbeitet, wobei dessen Materialität besondere Beachtung geschenkt wird. Von hier aus werden anschließend Relevanz und Konzept des 'sozialen Gedächtnis' in Bezug auf die materielle Umwelt vorgestellt. In der Verbindung von den Theorien zu Ding und Gedächtnis sowie unter Hinzunahme neuerer Ansätze zu einem dynamischen Verständnis von Kultur wird eine mögliche Balance zwischen objektivistischer und subjektivistischer Analyse aufgezeigt. Anstatt Dinge ahistorisch, fetischistisch oder lediglich medial zu interpretieren, wird ihre Interpretation verbunden mit den Ideen des sozialen Handelns und des symbolischen Interaktionismus als integrativer und hilfreicher Bestandteil einer allgemeinen Kulturtheorie dargestellt.
