Die Beiträge gehen von einem breiten Begriff des Ökonomischen aus und fragen nach der Interaktion von Geschlecht und anderen Differenzkategorien in Zusammenhang mit materieller Kultur, Krediten, Schulden und Vermögensarrangements. Ökonomisches Handeln von Frauen und Männern zeigt sich dabei aufs Engste mit sozialen Beziehungen und Logiken verknüpft, und zwar bis weit in das 20. Jahrhundert hinein. Zugleich wird sichtbar, wie kulturelle Phänomene auf Wirtschaftssektoren, auf die Geschlechterordnungen und die regulierenden Obrigkeiten gewirkt haben. Die Beiträge zeigen das Potenzial einer Verflechtungsgeschichte, die zu einem umfassenderen Verständnis ökonomischer Prozesse beiträgt.

Die zuletzt stark gestiegene Zahl von Historikerkommissionen auf nationaler, regionaler und lokaler wie auch auf bilateraler Ebene (Deutschland-Polen, Deutschland-Frankreich, Deutschland-Tschechien, Deutschland-Italien u.a.) zur Aufarbeitung der verbrecherischen Aspekte des „Dritten Reiches" und des Zweiten Weltkriegs können insgesamt als Teil einer neuen Geschichtspolitik sowie einer Erinnerungslandschaft begriffen werden, die die politische Kultur in Deutschland, aber auch in vielen anderen Ländern mit geprägt haben. Die Berichte der Kommissionen und ihrer Forschungsergebnisse werden regelmäßig der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht; zuweilen bildeten sie sogar – so im Fall der Veröffentlichung über „Das Amt" – den Anlass für langwierige öffentliche Kontroversen. Angesichts dieser Konstellationen waren eine systematische Bestandsaufnahme der jüngsten Entwicklungen sowie eine kritische Debatte der Tätigkeit der neu eingerichteten Historikerkommissionen überfällig. Die Einzelbeiträge des Tagungsbandes folgen einer gleichförmigen Struktur: Erstens geben sie Auskunft über den Modus der Beauftragung, die Form der Mitgliedschaft und generelle Arbeitsweisen. Zweitens geht es darum, die weiteren historischen Entstehungsbedingungen sowie die Arbeitsaufträge ausgewählter Kommissionen zu beleuchten. Drittens werden die hierbei aufgetretenen Probleme und auch die Grenzen ihrer Tätigkeit kritisch reflektiert. Darüber hinaus unterstreicht der Tagungsband die Notwendigkeit, Historikerkommissionen breite Handlungsspielräume zu gewähren, denn nur sie vermögen zur Überwindung nationaler und ideologischer Grenzen historischer Erkenntnisbildung einen substanziellen Beitrag zu leisten.

[Italiano]: In un momento così significativo per la storia europea e mondiale, questo volume vuole essere la raccolta di riflessioni scientifiche condotte sui rapporti tra le scelte politiche, le azioni militari e la fisionomia delle città e del paesaggio urbano, sull’evoluzione delle strutture e delle tecniche di difesa, sulla rappresentazione della guerra e dei suoi effetti sull’immagine urbana, sul recupero delle tracce della memoria cittadina. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

"The Ideology of Fascism" was written by Oswald Mosley in 1967 and provides a post WW2 analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of Fascism as a political doctrine, and utilising its strengths proposes a United Europe, in union with science, as a prime requirement for the 21st Century. "The Doctrine of Fascism" was written by Benito Mussolini and the Italian philosopher Giovanni Gentile. A key concept of which was that fascism was a rejection of previous models: "If the 19th century was the century of the individual we are free to believe that this is the 'collective' century, and therefore the century of the State." Giovanni Gentile was inspired by Italian intellectuals such as Mazzini, Rosmini, Gioberti, and Spaventa from whom he developed the idea of "self-construction," but also was strongly influenced by the German idealist and materialist schools of thought - namely Marx, Hegel, Fichte, and Nietzsche. Gentile was described by Mussolini, as 'the philosopher of Fascism'. Alfredo Rocco developed the economic and political theory of corporatism which would become part of the Fascist Manifesto of the National Fascist Party. Rocco denounced the European powers for imposing foreign culture on Italy and criticized the European powers for endorsing too much liberalism and individualism. The Fascist Manifesto was endorsed by a large number of intellectuals, and writers, including Luigi Pirandello, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and Giuseppe Ungaretti.
