Snehild is born amidst a raid on a stormy, winter night. She is delivered by a mystical jötunn woman and as she slips into the world, the Norns breathe a prophecy over her. Years later, Himlinge, the royal seat of Sialand, is suffering from political unrest. King Tormod suspects his brother-in-law is plotting against him. Royal advisor Brynjulf Raveneye worries about which of the twin princes should be heir to the throne. The high priestess Ragnfrid grows jealous of the local herbalist who is favoured by the royal family. Worst still, the herbalist’s daughter, Snehild, appears to have powerful prophetic powers that may threaten the priestess’ position. But at least there’s something she can do about that. Except you can’t destroy a heroine destined for greatness and Snehild has the favour of the gods and the blessing of the Norns. She flees her home and embarks on a quest to discover herself, her parentage and the true extent of her powers. "The Seer of Midgard" is a riveting high fantasy that will transport readers to an Iron-Age Scandinavia steeped in the rich and mystical traditions of Norse mythology. Filled with court intrigue, blood revenge and powerful magic, fans of "A Song of Ice and Fire" and "The Priory of the Orange Tree" will love this new series. A. M. Vedsø Olesen is a Danish author of critically acclaimed and award-winning mythology-inspired and historical novels. With her extensive knowledge of Denmark’s antiquity and Norse mythology, she unfolds the fantastic and adventurous universe in THE SEER OF MIDGARD, a tantalizing fantasy story inspired by the poem Völuspá from the Poetic Edda.

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Heidelberg (Anglistisches Institut), course: Introduction to Fantasy Literature, language: English, abstract: The influence of the Edda, as an inspiration for stories, is wide spread across our modern culture. There are comic books and movies about the god of thunder Thor, books have been written that are set in the realm of Asgard or Midgard, and the influence of the old, Norse myths can clearly be seen in the texts of many bands, especially Metal bands, like Manowar or Amon Amarth. Another huge impact on story-telling is the work of J.R.R. Tolkien. Many writers of our time are influenced by his world-building and of course the release of the movies based on his books made way for the fantasy genre to become known and loved by a broad audience. But even Tolkien has not invented his entire world out of thin air. It is reasonable to assume that he was, like many other artists, also influenced by Norse myths. The goal of this paper is to show that Tolkien’s characters and the stories in ‘The Lord of the Rings’, ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Silmarillion’ are heavily influenced by the Edda and similar Norse myths. There will be a comparison of different characters, races and places in Middle-Earth and of the Edda. Other possible influences like Greek or Roman Mythology, classical fairy tales or the Arthurian Saga were surely important for the development of Middle-Earth and its inhabitants, but they have to be ignored in this essay. One of the most important aspects of Tolkien’s creative work is of course the linguistic approach he took. There are several other works, even by Tolkien himself, that take a look on this aspect, but regarding the length of this paper this shall not be discussed. The essay starts with a comparison of Odin, the highest god in Norse mythology and characters of Tolkien, then goes to the race of dwarves, to finally look at other aspects of the story and how they might have their roots in the Edda.

Where is it that gods go after they've been banished? Maybe they haven't gone anywhere. In oblique encounters with passing strangers, the lives of ordinary and not-so-ordinary people turn in new and interesting directions. These stories are based on the myths of the Vikings, but they contain nothing magical or supernatural. Or do they? Sometimes it's hard to tell. Perhaps the magic lies in living men and women as they spend, and sometimes end, their Days in Midgard.

On Asgard, he is an almost-forgotten prince, desperate to prove himself, but on Midgard (Earth), he finds the adulation he craves as the traveling showman and magician, Lukas Black. But living two lives becomes increasingly complicated. Several attempts on his life on Midgard and a threat to his father's throne both seem connected to the Asgardian noblewoman he is expected to marry, though he finds himself falling instead for a beautiful American singer who is promised to another. Can Loki maintain his double life and stay a step ahead of whoever is trying to kill him? Or will the constant risk of discovery cause him to make his first mistake? History buffs and fantasy lovers alike will find themselves captivated by each twist and turn, as Loki experiences the Roaring Twenties in some of the most famous cities on Earth, meeting some favorite characters from history and Norse mythology along the way.
