"Europe has become an immigration continent. Yet the rights of immigrants and their access to citizenship differ widely between its nation-states. This collection of essays looks into the following questions: What is the legal status assigned to immigrants in the different European states? Under which conditions can foreigners become naturalized? Do traditional definitions of national citizenship sufficiently take into account new patterns of migration in this area? Is the new citizenship of the European Union a first step towards a supranational political membership and how will it affect immigrants from other countries? Will dual citizenship be seen as an adequate legal expression of multiple social ties that connect migrants to societies of destination and origin? What can be learned from the experience of nations built from immigration, such as Canada and Australia? Finally, the normative issues are addressed: How much cultural adaptation should be involved in naturalization? What can receiving states legitimately ask from immigrants and what can immigrants expect from their hosts? Do we need a new conception of citizenship that includes all permanent residents of a society, regardless of their nationalities and passports?" "This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the international workshop From Aliens to Citizens which was held in Vienna on 5 and 6 November 1993. The workshop was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Studies, the Wiener Integrationsfonds and the European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Employment And Development written by Gary S. Fields and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-30 with Business & Economics categories.

Employment and Development brings together the contributions of 2014 IZA Prize in Labor Economics award winner Gary S. Fields to address global employment and poverty problems. Most of the poor in developing countries live in households in which people work, but still they are poor because the best available work pays so little. Employment and Development: How Work Can Lead From and Into Poverty questions how economic growth affects standards of living, how labor markets work in developing countries, and how different labor market policies affect well-being. Through a collection of essays, this book tackles major questions in development and labor economics. Who benefits from economic growth and who is hurt by economic decline? Why are distributional factors and labor market conditions improving in some countries but not in others? How do developing countries' labor markets work? How would labor market conditions change if different policies were to be put into effect? What are the welfare consequences of these changes? Through distributional analysis, Fields examines inequality, poverty, income mobility, and economic well-being, and through analysis of changing labor market conditions he examines employment and unemployment, employment composition, and labor earnings. By concentrating on the poor and understanding how the labor markets work for them and how their labor market earnings might be raised in response to different policy interventions, Fields addresses questions of first-order importance for human well-being.

"The nation-state is challenged all over the world today. Regional movements, the reunification of separate territorial parts, the differentiation of formerly homogenous ethnic identities, the sequels of war, and the country-specific historical legacies present many different challenges for national identities and nationhood. The contributions in this volume constitute an attempt to put the many facets of the contemporary European experience into perspective."--BOOK JACKET.

Racism In Europe written by Neil MacMaster and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-08 with Social Science categories.

The study of modern racism has tended to treat anti-Semitism and anti-black racism as separate and unconnected phenomena. This innovative study argues that a full understanding of the origins and development of racism in Europe after 1870 needs to examine the structure and interrelationships between the two dominant forms of prejudice. Contrary to expectation. anti-black racism was not confined to the colonial maritime nations of western Europe, but pepetrated even the rural societies of central and eastern Europe. Likewise, anti-Semitism could flourish even in the almost total absence of Jews. MacMaster explores the conditions under which modern political movements, faced with the crisis of modernity, began to draw upon and mobilise the negative stereotypes that, through the development of the mass media, had become almost universal features of popular culture. By weaving together the changing spatial and temporal dimensions of anti-Semitic and anti-black prejudice the study provides a fresh and more global framework for understanding modern racism.
