Conociendo Mis Historias My drawings and paintings explore the human body in the universe and the universe in human bodies. Transfers of photographs of my family interwoven with large scale drawn portraits produced a way to combine my story with the threads that have formed my life. The resulting monumental drawings explore issues of identity, family, body, and personhood. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, to two Latino, immigrant, parents from the Dominican Republic. The Latino culture incorporates a long, rich tradition of storytelling. My father calls them cuentos. While narrating emotional and personal issues, I share my cuentos with the viewer. Through gestural painterly marks I use an additive and subtractive technique to build an atmospheric surface out of which a portrait emerges. Driven by images of my family (including my known and unknown stories), and by the easy manipulation of the materials (charcoal, graphite, and pigment on translucent double-sided drafting lm), my work tells a personal story, which becomes a way of coping, remembering, learning, and celebrating my family. From childhood, my parents instilled in me the idea of ¿̐ưeducation as a privilege.¿̐ư To me, these cuentos relate to the counter-narratives that we use today to tell the stories of a marginalized group of people. My point of origin will be my personal counter-narrative, because to be a good teacher I have to rst know my inner sel ood more fully. By studying critical race theory and latino critical theory I will become self-actualized. I will better understand my upbringing in the American education system and its in uence on my educational experience, which in turn will inform how I help my students¿̐ư learning. In my teaching practice I hope that I can share with my students how people are made up of experiences that can be shared through stories. I want them to know that people gain motivation and inspiration from their families, languages, cultural in uences, and experiences, in order to understand and explore the world around them.
