The allure of mobile, portable architecture is worldwide and centuries old. From the desert tents of the Bedouin to the silvery capsules of the Airstream trailer, mobile architecture has inspired designers with its singular characteristics of lightness, transience, and practicality. In "More Mobile", the follow-up to her groundbreaking 2002 book Mobile, Jennifer Siegal explores the ever-growing range of possibilities of portable, demountable structures. From serious Refuge Wear to the playful Bar Rectum and the practical Kunsthallen, "More Mobile" explores the working methods and finished work of the most exciting contemporary designers and presents today’s most dynamic, active mobile structures in beautiful color images, detailed drawings, and thoughtful text. Contributors include Studio-Orta, Dré Wapenaar, Andrea Zittel, Andrew Maynard, Andreas Vogler, Horden Cherry Lee Architects, N55, Atelier Bow-Wow, Mark Fisher Studio, MMW, LOT-EK, and the Office of Mobile Design. A foreword by Jude Stewart discusses life on the move, while an introduction by William J. Mitchell considers the house as a robot in which to live.

"Structures which move in the course of normal use, or which have to be assembled at high speed on a relatively unprepared sight, offer a particular challenge to the designer. The interaction between the structure and the mechanism by which it moves is important for mobile frameworks. The speed of assembly (and the implications to logistics, materials and cost) is a major factor in many structures." "This book contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Mobile and Rapidly Assembled Structures (MARAS 96) held in Seville in June 1996. The book covers a range of topics including Deployable Structures, Fabric Architecture, Materials, Architectural Concepts, Geometry, Bridges, Transport, Towers and Masts, and Retractable Structures." "The proceedings will be of interest to engineers, architects and researchers concerned with the design, analysis, manufacture and erection of rapidly assembled structures."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Structures that move in the course of normal use, or which have to be assembled or erected rapidly on a relatively unprepared site, offer a particular challenge to the designer. The interaction between the structure and the mechanism by which it moves is essential in these cases. The speed of assembly, what this means in terms of logistics, materials and cost, is a major factor in many such structures. Mobile and rapidly assembled structures play a major role in disaster mitigation and temporary accommodation. They are of primary importance in many military as well as civilian applications and are widely used for rescue and maintenance services. Their importance continues to grow in contemporary society where speed of response is of primary importance. Also, in many cases, their reversible deployment and potential reuse can lead to a lower economical and/or ecological impact, providing a more sustainable solution. There are common problems such as the efficient design of assembly joints, the resistance to damage of the membrane and metal cladding, crashworthiness and the limits of serviceability. Some areas of the subject are already well documented, but knowledge is fragmented and there is little design guidance available in the form of textbooks, data sheets or codes of practice. The interaction between morphology, kinematic behaviour and structural performance – typical for these structures – poses real challenges in terms of design and successful realisation. This multi-disciplinary proceedings volume contains papers presented at the fourth International Conference on Mobile, Adaptable and Rapidly Assembled Structures. Topics covered include: Rapidly erected bridges and transportable bridges; Disaster mitigation structures; Temporary structures and dwellings; Deployable systems and structural mechanisms; Tensegrity and reciprocal frames; Origami-based structures; Inflated and air-supported structures and membrane shelters; Rapidly assembled kit-of-parts systems; Leisure structures, demountable grandstands and scaffolding systems; Mobile inspection platforms; Folding and telescopic masts and gangways; Tower cranes and mobile lifting apparatus; Trackways and prefabricated paving for roads and airfields; Protective structures; Rapid repairs of structures; Structures in adverse conditions; Spacecraft structures; Construction and repair.

Theory Experimental Investigation Of Social Structures written by David Willer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-14 with Social Science categories.

First Published in 1987. This work demonstrates how experimental designs are produced through the active use of social theory. It also shows how theoretically designed experiments address broader issues in social theory, issues that can be traced back to the classical theories of Marx and Weber. Because it discusses the structure of a working theory as well as the applications, this volume encourages readers to think of social structures dynamically.

Portable Architecture written by Robert Kronenburg and has been published by Walter de Gruyter this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-05-16 with Architecture categories.

Since the earliest people lived as nomads, their buildings were portable, constructed in a way that allowed them to be rebuilt as they moved to new locations for better living conditions as the seasons changed. This book discusses the forerunners, present context, and technology of portable architecture. It documents numerous international examples, organized by areas of application, and offers a broad array of suggestions for practical design. In the Arts and Culture section, Shigeru Ban’s Nomadic Museum, made of shipping containers in the USA and Japan is examined, as is Mark Fisher’s event architecture for concert tours by the Rolling Stones and U2. Suggestions for flexible living include Richard Horden’s micro compact home and the Container Home Kit from LOT/EK. The design of mobile structures used in extreme situations, such as the Antarctic or in the aftermath of natural catastrophes, is explored. Exhibition and entertainment facilities are other typical areas of application for light, mobile structures. Demountable, temporary structures allow for exciting architectural experimentation which can then be prototyped for regular use.
