What sets this study apart from the vast literature on Monet is Gedo's focused, jargon-free, accessible, psychoanalytic assessment of Monet and his relationship with his first wife and mistress, Camille Doncieux, and the impact of this complex relationship on the artist's work. Using this psychobiographical approach in conducting a careful reading of primary source material and Monet's paintings, Gedo (independent scholar) does much to debunk a good deal of the mythology surrounding the artist's life at this period. She offers fresh insights into the content of many of Monet's major paintings, particularly his figurative works that feature Camille as a model or subject. So, for example, Gedo proposes that Monet's Camille (or The Woman in the Green Dress) from 1866, via its composition, "functioned as a metaphor for the uncertainty characterizing the relationship between lovers," in addition to exposing publicly Camille as Monet's mistress. As is the danger when applying psychoanalysis to the study of art history, some of Gedo's assertions and interpretations approach the level of implausibility; however, these flights of psychoanalytic fancy are few and far between. The writing is engaging, endnotes are extensive but not oppressive, and the book is sufficiently illustrated with many images in color. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Nothing affects the modern economy (and society) more than decisions made in the market place, especially, but not only, decisions made by consumers. Although it is not startling to suggest that decisions made in production are affected by choices consumers make, consumers have long been viewed, not only by academic economists, as individual, isolated rational actors that make or refrain from purchases purely on the basis of narrow financial considerations. Markets are not and never were morally neutral. Market relations have always had an often taken-for-granted moral underpinning. The moralization of the markets refers to the dissolution and replacement of the conventional moral underpinnings of market conduct, for example, in the music market, financial markets, and corporate governance. It further implies not only the heightened importance of new ethical precepts, but the significant change in the role of moral ideals in market behavior. These profound transformations of economic conduct are accompanied and co-determined by societal conflicts. The moralization of markets represents thus a new stage in the social evolution of markets. The book is divided into four parts, in which the twelve chapters, written by contributors from different social science disciplines, deal with the context of the moralization of the markets; the major social institutions; and present case studies that examine European and American attitudes and behavior towards tobacco and GMO; expansion of the private and ethics in business; and how workers respond to the new corporate norms. The world’s oceans cover 70% of the earth’s surface and are home to a myriad of amazing and beautiful creatures. However, the biodiversity of the oceans is incre- ingly coming under serious threat from many human activities including overfi- ing, use of destructive fishing methods, pollution and commercial aquaculture. In addition, climate change is already having an impact on some marine ecosystems. This book discusses some of the major threats facing marine ecosystems by cons- ering a range of topics, under chapters discussing biodiversity (Chapter 1), fisheries (Chapter 2), aquaculture (Chapter 3), pollution (Chapter 4) and the impacts of increasing greenhouse gas emissions (Chapter 5). It goes on to explore solutions to the problems by discussing equitable and sustainable management of the oceans (Chapter 6) and protecting marine ecosystems using marine reserves (Chapter 7). Presently, 76% of the oceans are fully or over-exploited with respect to fishing, and many species have been severely depleted. It is abundantly clear that, in general, current fisheries management regimes are to blame for much of the widespread degradation of the oceans. Many policy-makers and scientists now agree that we must adopt a radical new approach to managing the seas – one that is precautionary in nature and has protection of the whole marine ecosystem as its primary objective. This ‘ecosystem-based approach’ is vital if we are to ensure the health of our oceans for future generations.

The 17th Geneva Report on the World Economy examines the causes of the unusually low interest rates seen in recent years, asks whether they are likely to persist, and explores the possible consequences should that happen. On the causes, the report argues that demographic developments and Chinese financial integration have been important drivers, reinforced since the crisis by a reluctance to invest and a shift in investor preferences towards safe assets. But some of these forces are likely to reverse in the future, suggesting that the current period of unusually low interest rates is unlikely to persist indefinitely. The pace at which that reversal will happen remains highly uncertain, however, and dependent on longer-term policy choices. The return to historically more normal levels of interest rates may consequently be quite drawn out and policymakers need to be alert to the consequences. Aside from increasing the frequency with which monetary policies are constrained by the lower bound on policy rates, persistently low interest rates on safe assets also encourage the adoption of strategies to lever up returns, so heightening the risks to financial stability. While macroprudential policies represent the first line of defense against such risks, policymakers should be careful not to expect too much from them.
