Living Weapons written by Gregory D. Koblentz and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-05-16 with Political Science categories.

"Biological weapons are widely feared, yet rarely used. Biological weapons were the first weapon prohibited by an international treaty, yet the proliferation of these weapons increased after they were banned in 1972. Biological weapons are frequently called 'the poor man's atomic bomb,' yet they cannot provide the same deterrent capability as nuclear weapons. One of my goals in this book is to explain the underlying principles of these apparent paradoxes."—from Living Weapons Biological weapons are the least well understood of the so-called weapons of mass destruction. Unlike nuclear and chemical weapons, biological weapons are composed of, or derived from, living organisms. In Living Weapons, Gregory D. Koblentz provides a comprehensive analysis of the unique challenges that biological weapons pose for international security. At a time when the United States enjoys overwhelming conventional military superiority, biological weapons have emerged as an attractive means for less powerful states and terrorist groups to wage asymmetric warfare. Koblentz also warns that advances in the life sciences have the potential to heighten the lethality and variety of biological weapons. The considerable overlap between the equipment, materials and knowledge required to develop biological weapons, conduct civilian biomedical research, and develop biological defenses creates a multiuse dilemma that limits the effectiveness of verification, hinders civilian oversight, and complicates threat assessments. Living Weapons draws on the American, Soviet, Russian, South African, and Iraqi biological weapons programs to enhance our understanding of the special challenges posed by these weapons for arms control, deterrence, civilian-military relations, and intelligence. Koblentz also examines the aspirations of terrorist groups to develop these weapons and the obstacles they have faced. Biological weapons, Koblentz argues, will continue to threaten international security until defenses against such weapons are improved, governments can reliably detect biological weapon activities, the proliferation of materials and expertise is limited, and international norms against the possession and use of biological weapons are strengthened.

When football coach Tiger Ellison was faced with his first losing season ever, he had to muster all the creative will he had acquired since childhood to turn the season around. In doing so, he invented the most wide-open, productive, fan-pleasing scheme of aerial football the game had ever seen! He shared his philosophy with the coaching world in 1965, by writing a book called Run and Shoot Football: Offense of the Future. His dramatic offense changed the way football has been played ever since, all the way from the Little Leagues to the NFL. But this story transcends football, taking place during the social turbulence of the 20th Century. As educator and coach, Tiger dedicated his life to tapping into the fighting spirit of each of his youngsters, regardless of race, creed, or social status. He challenged each to build the character, confidence and courage to pursue a noble cause, in the classroom, on the gridiron of American football, and in life. It is a poignant reminder of the power each of us has within us to become a real winner. Tiger Ellison had a passion for life, country and sport that were absolutely contagious for those around him. When you read his story, you may laugh a little, you may learn some things about football strategy, but I am certain you will love Tiger as we players did and see why his positive philosophy of life influenced all of us in a very special way. Dr. Rex Kern, President, MSB Financial, United Midwest Savings Bank; 1968 Buckeye National Championship Quarterback and 1969 Rose Bowl MVP; Member of The Rose Bowl Hall of Fame This is one football story that is not about power and money, rather a powerful and creative mind that left its imprint forever on players, coaches, and modern offensive football. At a time when football has become big business, Tigers philosophy will remind us all why we love the game, what we can learn from it, and who we can become by it. Earle Bruce, Former Head Football Coach, The Ohio State University A real masterpiece! Every teacher, coach and mothers son should have and use this material. From Loneliness To Solitude In Person Centred Health Care written by Stephen Buetow and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-26 with Medical categories.

This innovative book provides a new conceptual analysis of loneliness – a condition associated with severe health consequences, including increased morbidity and early death. Arguing that social connection is not the only answer, it explores pathways for transforming loneliness to healthy solitude. The first part of the book draws on the humanities and arts, including psychology, philosophy, and literature to analyse the common, and potentially serious, problem of loneliness. It makes the case that the condition is less a deficiency than a state of self-disconnection that modernity feeds through social forces. The second part of the book looks at how person-centred health care can help educate persons to transform loneliness into healthy solitude. It provides an analysis of self-connection and spiritual connection, discussing how these forms of contact can mitigate risks associated with both lack of social connection, and social connection itself, such as self-disconnection and rejection by others. It goes on to demonstrate that connection to the self and spirit can make aloneness a resource and facilitate access to benefits of connecting with others. This thought-provoking book provides students, scholars, and practitioners from a range of health and social care backgrounds with a new way of thinking about, researching, and practising with lonely people.
