Das 'Hässliche' oder auch Nicht-Schöne (oder das so Empfundene) hat sich in der Kunst nach 1850 mehr und mehr etabliert und ist im 20. Jahrhundert gar nicht mehr aus ihr weg zu denken. Der theoretische und ästhetische Diskurs hält in seiner Kontroverse allerdings bis heute an und schafft es erst in den letzten Jahren das Hässliche als ästhetische Kategorie zu akzeptieren. Die Akzeptanz des als hässlich Empfundenen macht natürlich auch vor der Popmusik nicht halt. Hört man sich nur etwas durch die Geschichte der Popmusik, so erkannt man sehr schnell, dass auch erfolgreiche Popmusik viele Elemente des nicht Schönen bzgl. musikalischer und klanglicher Parameter enthält. Die Stimmen Janis Joplins oder Bob Dylans sind nach den Regeln der Ästhetik sicher nicht schön, die verzerrten Gitarren im Heavy Metal oder die kurzen und einfachen Formen des Punk wohl ebenso nicht. Einerseits wird in der vorliegenden Studie theoretisch untersucht, warum das Hässliche in der Popmusik musikalisch-interpretatorisch und klanglich möglich ist, während das zum Beispiel in der westlichen Kunstmusik nicht denkbar ist. Hierzu mu ̈ssen vorerst die Begrifflichkeiten der Popmusik und des Hässlichen so klar wie möglich umrissen werden. Außerdem soll in Form einer Inhaltsanalyse von Amazon Kundenrezensionen erörtert werden, wie die Wahrnehmung der PophörerInnen durch die Existenz von landläufig als hässlich empfundenen Elementen innermusikalischer und technisch-klanglicher Natur in der Popmusik beeinflusst wird. Entsteht durch den Einsatz „hässlicher“ Elemente ein Mehr- oder Minderwert fu ̈r den Hörer/die Hörerin? Wie kann man diesen Mehr- oder Minderwert charakterisieren? Gibt es signifikante Zusammenhänge gewisser Kategorien „hässlicher“ Elemente mit gewissen Kategorien von Mehr- oder Minderwert? Abschließend werden entsprechende praktische und theoretische Schlussfolgerungen fu ̈r die Popmusikproduktion gezogen. Um das Feld der Untersuchung einzugrenzen, wird ausschließlich auf die Stimme im Pop eingegangen.

Ernst Kurth as Theorist and Analyst is the first book length study devoted to the writings of one of this century's most important music theorists. In contrast to previous discussions, Lee A. Rothfarb's study explains Kurth's theories in light of his analyses of specific musical examples. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Kurth approached music primarily from a cognitive rather than a purely technical viewpoint. In a unique kind of experiential analysis, he examined the psychological foundations of counterpoint, harmony, and form, and considered the affective, as opposed to solely structural or syntactic, effects of melody, chord, interval, and tone. The introduction provides a biographical sketch of Kurth, based on archival research and personal interview with his widow, son, and many of his doctoral students. Rothfarb also discusses the intellectual currents of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, both musical and nonmusical, which shaped Kurth's outlook. A rare case among history's great music contemporaries, Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) and Richard Strauss (1864-1949) enjoyed a close friendship until Mahler's death in 1911.
