Excerpt from My King and His Service A Gentle Spirit, a temperament alive to all innocent joys, to all the harmonies of life and literature, a deep and earnest faith, a loving self-surrender to the Saviour who was the object of that faith - these are the qualities which make Frances Ridley Havergal a character of exceptional interest, not only to professing Christians, but to all who recognize and revere the spirit of the Gospel teachings. For having the gift of expression - a simple and pellucid style through which the soul poured itself out in either prose or verse - the qualities which endeared her to the friends who knew her in person won her a world-wide circle of friends among those who only knew her through her published writings. Miss Havergal was born December 14th, 1836, and died June 3d, 1879. She was the daughter of Rev. William Henry Havergal, famous as a writer of sacred music. Titles have always been conferred on persons both to identify their functions in society and to assign honorary status. In Egypt even more than in Mesopotamia, function-related and honorary titles were so valued that officials and functionaries of varying stations collected the titles accrued in their lifetime and preserved them in a titulary, the ancient equivalent of a resume. Israelites serving at the royal courts in Jerusalem and Samaria or in local administrations also held title, but the sources suggest far fewer of them than their neighbors. Nili Fox analyzes the titles and roles of civil officials and functionaries in Israel and Judah during the monarchy, including key ministers of the central government, regional administrators, and palace attendants. The nineteen titles fall into three categories: status-related titles, function-related titles, and miscellaneous designations that could be held by a variety of officials. Fox sets these Israelite and Judahite titles in their ancient context through extensive study of Egyptian, Akkadian, and Ugaritic records. She also draws upon the corpus of Hebrew epigraphic material, which allows her to explore economic components of state organization such as royal land grants, supply networks, and systems of accounting, which would be impossible to understand on the basis of the Hebrew Bible alone. Fox also treats the widely debated issue of whether Israelite state organization was influenced by foreign models and, if so, how much. The evidence of non-Hebrew sources offers little concrete material to substantiate theories that Israel modeled its government after a foreign prototype, and Fox offers a more finessed approach. Many features of Israelite administration are best explained as basic elements of any monarchic structure in the ancient Near East that developed to satisfy the needs of an evolving local system. Other seemingly foreign features have a long tradition in Canaan and probably were naturally assimilated. Fox recognizes the interconnections between the cultures in the region but emphasizes the need to closely examine the Israelite system with internal evidence.

The first English translation of a strange and unusual Persian epic, this action-packed tale of an evil, monstrous king explores questions of nature and nurture and brings the global middle ages to life. The great Persian epic known as the Kushnameh follows the entangled lives of Kush the Tusked––a monstrous antihero with tusks and ears like an elephant, descended from the evil emperor Zahhak––and Abtin, the exiled grandson of the last true Persian emperor. Abandoned at birth in the forests of China and raised by Abtin, Kush grows into a powerful and devious warrior. Kush and his foes scheme and wage war across a global stage reaching from Spain and Africa to China and Korea. Between epic battles and magnificent feasts are disturbing, sometimes realistic portrayals of abuse and oppression and philosophical speculation about nature and nurture and the origins of civilization. A fantastical adventure story stretching across the known world and a literary classic of unparalleled richness, this important work of medieval Persian literature is a valuable source for understanding the history of racism and constructions of race and the flows of lore and legend from the Central Asian Silk Road and the Sahara to the sea routes of the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean. The Kushnameh is a treasure trove of Islamic and pre-Islamic Persian cultural history and a striking contemporary document of the “global middle ages,” now available to English-speaking readers for the first time.

When I think of all my possessions to include any wealth in savings or retirement funds-my home and cars; my health, the strength of my body and mind; all that I have accomplished; my talents, titles, or degrees-is there anything that I can claim aside from the magnificent grace of God? Anything? For me, there is nothing that I can claim. Since I came into this world with nothing and will leave with nothing, I am but a steward of God, the One who owns it all. I am the King's keeper and accountable to the King. This King is my precious Savior, Jesus. To gain a better understanding of my role as steward, it is necessary for me to renew my mind and reflect upon what God's Word says about stewardship. To prepare for His return, the King's Keeper will help me discover: 1. those characteristics of the life of a good steward that are pleasing to the King and that will help me demonstrate faithful service without reason for question; 2. how I can steward God's creation; 3. how to steward myself and understand the proper alignment of the body, soul, and spirit for kingdom service; 4. how I can steward my time so that it is pleasing to my heavenly Father, being all about His business; 5. how I can take an honest look at my attitude and behavior concerning my possessions and come into alignment with the desires of the King; 6. how I can steward God's Word and be found faithfully administering the mysteries of the Word of God in love, always giving the glory to Him; 7. how I can steward God's manifold grace and be found fully operating in the gifts in which I have been given for kingdom service; 8. how I can engage my community as a kingdom representative; and 9. how I can tend to the precious relationships in which I have been trusted. A steward must always be ready for the master's return, and the King may return at any time!
