..".My heart was pounding so loud I could feel the blood pulsing in my ears. Every nerve was on alert. Did I hear someone behind me? I rolled the garbage cans to the curb, like I did every Thursday night in this wealthy town, the only task I did unattended, a brief moment away from the watchful eyes of my captors, those I had been sold a slave to when I was just seven years old in Taiwan. Now was my chance to escape. I bolted, running as fast as I could towards the end of the street and into the car that was waiting for me. Everything I owned I left behind, except the tattered shirt and dirty pants I wore, clothes that reminded me of the life I had been living these past twenty years--a torn and ravaged existence, a victim of human trafficking..." Shari Ho's incredible story of slavery and survival to inspirational speaker will grip your soul and challenge you to speak up on behalf of the silent ones around you, those who long to say...."My Name is Also Freedom."

In Betty Reid Soskin’s 96 years of living, she has been a witness to a grand sweep of American history. When she was born in 1921, the lynching of African-Americans was a national epidemic, blackface minstrel shows were the most popular American form of entertainment, white women had only just won the right to vote, and most African-Americans in the Deep South could not vote at all. From her great-grandmother, who had been enslaved until her mid-20s, Betty heard stories of slavery and the times of terror and struggle for black folk that followed. In her lifetime, Betty has watched the nation begin to confront its race and gender biases when forced to come together in the World War II era; seen our differences nearly break us apart again in the upheavals of the civil rights and Black Power eras; and, finally, lived long enough to witness both the election of an African-American president and the re-emergence of a militant, racist far right. The child of proud Louisiana Creole parents who refused to bow down to Southern discrimination, Betty was raised in the Bay Area black community before the great westward migration of World War II. After working in the civilian home front effort in the war years, she and her husband, Mel Reid, helped break down racial boundaries by moving into a previously all-white community east of the Oakland hills, where they raised four children while resisting the prejudices against the family that many of her neighbors held. With Mel, she opened up one of the first Bay Area record stores in Berkeley both owned by African-Americans and dedicated to the distribution of African-American music. Her volunteer work in rehabilitating the community where the record shop began eventually led her to a paid position as a state legislative aide, helping to plan the innovative Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California, then to a “second” career as the oldest park ranger in the history of the National Park Service. In between, she used her talents as a singer and songwriter to interpret and chronicle the great American social upheavals that marked the 1960s. In 2003, Betty displayed a new talent when she created the popular blog CBreaux Speaks, sharing the sometimes fierce, sometimes gently persuasive, but always brightly honest story of her long journey through an American and African-American life. Blending together selections from many of Betty’s hundreds of blog entries with interviews, letters, and speeches, Sign My Name to Freedom invites you along on that journey, through the words and thoughts of a national treasure who has never stopped looking at herself, the nation, or the world with fresh eyes.

"Hello Mr. Tree. Do you remember me?" Shari whispered. "I was a little girl when you knew me as a slave, but I just wanted to let you know...I'm free now!" The beauty of Shari's favorite tree in its park-like surroundings was in stark contrast to this little girl who was once held as a slave. As Shari continued to speak to the tree, I tried to catch my breath as I looked up at the tree that was cut in the form of a square at the very top. Griped with a new-found sense of God's providence that completely amazed me, I realized that the name of my company Square Tree Publishing was no accident--nor the fact that Shari and I had been brought together by God's design. Sold as a slave when she was only seven years old, Shari Ho endured much physical and emotional abuse until she got free twenty years later. Little did Shari realize the media firestorm her story would ignite. She would become a beacon of hope to a whole new generation both locally and abroad when she was the focus of the CNN Freedom Report that made headlines all around the world. Her harrowing story is chronicled in the book, My Name is Also Freedom. Finding Freedom Was Just the Beginning is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of her book. This four-and half-year journey and a trip to Taiwan, includes all the backstories, miracles, and God-stories that happened along the way. There were so many, they had to be recounted--amazing stories of God's providence intersecting with sheer faith that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I pray that these God-stories not only inspire you but give you a greater level of faith for your own life. I know that is what Shari would want for you, too. "As the interpreter for our team in Taiwan, there were some things you just didn't need to interpret...like God's tangible presence in the room." -- Candy Chou, Chinese Interpreter

This is the remarkable story of Phillis Wheatley, who is born into an African family of griots, or storytellers, but captured by slave raiders and forced aboard a slave ship, where appalling conditions spell death for many of her companions. Numerous sharks follow the ship, feeding on the corpses of slaves thrown overboard. Weakened by the voyage and near death in a Boston slave market, Wheatley is bought by a kind family who nurses her back to health and teaches her to read and write. Soon her mistress recognizes that the girl is a quick learner and talented. At the age of 12, a torrent of poetry begins to flow out of Wheatley. Proud of her achievements, her mistress organizes readings in Boston's finest parlors and drawing rooms, and Wheatley's fame spreads. But even when many in Boston are calling her a prodigy and a genius, some remain unsure that a slave should be able to write, much less write poetry. When Phillis travels to London she is a media sensation, feted by the cream of English society. A book of her poems is published, and she finally gains her freedom. This amazing story, wide in scope, is based on fact and told convincingly from young Wheatley's point of view.

A Question Of Freedom written by William G. Thomas and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-24 with History categories.

The story of the longest and most complex legal challenge to slavery in American history For over seventy years and five generations, the enslaved families of Prince George’s County, Maryland, filed hundreds of suits for their freedom against a powerful circle of slaveholders, taking their cause all the way to the Supreme Court. Between 1787 and 1861, these lawsuits challenged the legitimacy of slavery in American law and put slavery on trial in the nation’s capital. Piecing together evidence once dismissed in court and buried in the archives, William Thomas tells an intricate and intensely human story of the enslaved families (the Butlers, Queens, Mahoneys, and others), their lawyers (among them a young Francis Scott Key), and the slaveholders who fought to defend slavery, beginning with the Jesuit priests who held some of the largest plantations in the nation and founded a college at Georgetown. A Question of Freedom asks us to reckon with the moral problem of slavery and its legacies in the present day.

On April 7, 1988, Albie Sachs, an activist South African lawyer and a leading member of the ANC, was car-bombed in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, by agents of South Africa’s security forces. His right arm was blown off, and he lost sight in one eye. This intimate and moving account of his recovery traces the gradual recuperation of his broken body and his triumphant reentry into the world, where his dream of soft vengeance was realized with the achievement of democracy in South Africa. This book captures the spirit of a remarkable man: his enormous optimism, his commitment to social justice, and his joyous wonder at the life that surrounds him. A new preface and epilogue reflect on the making of Abby Ginzberg’s documentary film titled Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa.
