Environmental assessment and management involve the production of scientific knowledge and its use in decision-making processes. The result is that within these essentially rational, political assessment frameworks, experts are creating and applying scientific knowledge for decision and management purposes that actually have strong ethical and aesthetic dimensions. Yet these rational political frameworks lack the tools to provide guidance on ethical and aesthetic issues that affect the wider public. This revolutionary work argues that ethical and aesthetic dimensions can only be brought into environmental politics and policies by citizens actively taking a stand on the specific matters in question. The author draws on Habermas trisection of rationality as cognitive-instrumental, moral-practical and aesthetic-expressive, to suggest that truly effective environmental policy needs to activate all three approaches and not favour only the rational. To achieve this objective, the author argues that public participation in environmental policy and assessment is necessary to counteract the dictatorship of technical and economic instrumentality in environmental policy - the failure to take ethical and aesthetic rationalities into account - and, more importantly, how such policy is applied on the ground to shape our natural and material world.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “In our uncertain age, which can so often feel so dark and disturbing, Steven Pinker has distinguished himself as a voice of positivity.” – New York Times Can reading a book make you more rational? Can it help us understand why there is so much irrationality in the world? Steven Pinker, author of Enlightenment Now (Bill Gates’s "new favorite book of all time”) answers all the questions here Today humanity is reaching new heights of scientific understanding--and also appears to be losing its mind. How can a species that developed vaccines for Covid-19 in less than a year produce so much fake news, medical quackery, and conspiracy theorizing? Pinker rejects the cynical cliché that humans are simply irrational--cavemen out of time saddled with biases, fallacies, and illusions. After all, we discovered the laws of nature, lengthened and enriched our lives, and set out the benchmarks for rationality itself. We actually think in ways that are sensible in the low-tech contexts in which we spend most of our lives, but fail to take advantage of the powerful tools of reasoning we’ve discovered over the millennia: logic, critical thinking, probability, correlation and causation, and optimal ways to update beliefs and commit to choices individually and with others. These tools are not a standard part of our education, and have never been presented clearly and entertainingly in a single book--until now. Rationality also explores its opposite: how the rational pursuit of self-interest, sectarian solidarity, and uplifting mythology can add up to crippling irrationality in a society. Collective rationality depends on norms that are explicitly designed to promote objectivity and truth. Rationality matters. It leads to better choices in our lives and in the public sphere, and is the ultimate driver of social justice and moral progress. Brimming with Pinker’s customary insight and humor, Rationality will enlighten, inspire, and empower.

The Complicated Ape: The Windows of the Eyes, The Roots of the Soul, The Devil's Gift and Our Divine Curse By: Bryce Winn We live under an illusion that we live in a world of harsh divisions. People don't want unity because we have an affinity for totalitarianism, because we have a common ideal, food, and security, and we identify as the victim and likewise identify a group of oppressors rather then any specific individual, so invite the tyrannical excess of our position and impose it on people because people don't normally care if it doesn't affect them and all the better if it benefits them. Ecofeminism and Pantheism has been abandoned by many philosophers and thinkers because of there lack of there inconsistencies and lack of identity, but these belief systems can lead to the synchronicity of opposites such as the masculine and the feminine, eastern and western religions, and republican and democrats. Ecofeminism and a Pantheism can orient us towards compassion and humility, which should be the foundation of our ethos. Animal cruelty, tribalism, religion, and atheism are psychological indicators of a suffering society. There is a correlation between how societies become cruel and societal erosion. The environment is the heart of the economy because of the resources it offers but the genocide of native animals and ecocide often coincide with a cruel society. Once a society degenerates into ignorance, resentment, betrayal, division, fragmentation, and corruption, then society will become cruel and become totalitarian and then it will eventually collapse. The source of psychological suffering and what leads to crime and wickedness is the fall from nature and the separation of the family household. The way that societies become cruel begin with betrayal, deception, and rejection and a societal indicator of this when we see isolation, alienation, and tyranny, and this is caused by family, friends, and the state. Because this resentment towards life and towards state accumulates over generations and is passed down through the form of childhood trauma. In other words, we have a non-ending cycle of resentful parents which leads them to be tyrannical, and this accumulates and makes up society, and then we make our children internalize the problems of society through shame dumping, blame shifting, worship and dogmatic intrusion. We do this because children are extensions of ourselves. All issues in society start in the family household.

They’re the golden couple of Santa Fe. With his vast wealth, Molloy has launched an innovative foundation. His new wife, Judith Greenwood, is an internationally known scientist, who works at the famous think-tank, the Santa Fe Institute, pursuing the sciences of complexity. They’ve found each other late in life, and their love story is the envy of everyone in town. Santa Feans yearn to be invited to the famous long table Molloy and his wife host every Sunday night, or to their monthly salon, for the best talk, the best food, and the best wine. Sure to be at these evenings are some of the couple’s closest friends, the “starchitect” Leandro Torres, known worldwide for his prize-winning buildings; the influential gallery owner, Nola Holliman; and the beautiful trilingual legal translator, Lucie Marchmont. Yet each of these enviable men and women conceals a tragic personal story. When 9/11 occurs in faraway New York City, these privileged Santa Feans are deeply affected, and must struggle to keep their secrets hidden. An intergenerational struggle erupts, where fathers and sons, and even grandfathers, intrude on each other’s lives. As everyone negotiates the catastrophic autumn of 2001, two deaths, plus a nearly fatal car accident, intensify already raw emotions. Though each of these friends suffers deeply, and seeks consolation in very different ways, it is above all Molloy and his wife, the golden couple, who are forced to confront the cruelest meanings of the poem they’ve loved and read together, “Paradise Lost.” PAMELA McCORDUCK is the author or coauthor of nine published books, three of them novels. “Bounded Rationality” is the second in a projected series of Santa Fe Stories, a trilogy whose first book is “The Edge of Chaos,” also published by Sunstone Press. Her “Machines Who Think,” a history of artificial intelligence, was honored the year of its publication by the New York Public Library; and was reissued in 2004 in a 25th anniversary edition. She has recently written and lectured on “the singularity,” that future moment when computers might be more intelligent than their human creators. Among her other books are “The Universal Machine,” a study of the worldwide intellectual impact of the computer, and “Aaron's Code,” an inquiry into the future of art and artificial intelligence. With Nancy Ramsey, she wrote “The Futures of Women,” four scenarios for women worldwide in the year 2015. She has consulted, and constructed future scenarios, for numerous firms in the transportation, financial, and high-tech sectors. She has appeared on CBS, CNN, and Public Television, and CNN devoted a two-part series to “The Futures of Women.” She divides her time between New York City and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Includes Readers Guide.

Knowledge And Faith written by Jan Salamucha and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-08 with Philosophy categories.

Jan Salamucha was born on the 10th of June 1903 in Warsaw and murdered on the 11th of August 1944 in Warsaw during the Warsaw Uprising very early on in his scholarly career. He is the most original representative of the branch of the Lvov-Warsaw School known as the Cracow Circle. The Circle was a grouping of scholars who were interested in reconstructing scholasticism and Christian philosophy in general by means of mathematical logic. As Jan Lukasiewicz’s successor in the area of logic and Konstanty Michalski’s student in the area of the history of medieval thought, Salamucha had an excellent preparation for this task. His main achievements include a masterful logical analysis of the proof ex motu for the existence of God, a modern interpretation of analogical notions and a comprehensive approach to the problem of essence. He also contributed several historical studies: he examined Aristotle’s theory of deduction (and found contradictions in it), he reconstructed William Ockham’s propositional logic and established the authenticity of his treatise on insolubilia, and he identified the historical sources of the antinomies in Antiquity and the Middle Ages. He did not shy away from popularizing philosophy, and in that work he was able to elucidate rather than oversimplify the complexities of philosophy.
