Nadar, whose real name was Felix Tournachon (1820-1910), was a conspicuous, even astonishing presence in nineteenth-century France. Engaging and quick-witted, he invented himself over and over as a bohemian writer, a journalist, a romantic utopian, a caricaturist, a portrait photographer, a balloonist, an entrepreneur, a prophet of aeronautics. The name "Nadar" was on everyone's lips. Today, it is Nadar's photography that is remembered. His sitters, who were often his friends, included the great men and women of his time: Dumas, Rossini, Baudelaire, Sarah Bernhardt, Daumier, Berlioz, George Sand, Delacroix. Nadar's legendary name has been attached not only to his original photographs but to reprints, copies and a great deal of studio work. For that reason, this volume exactingly reproduces some one hundred photographs from the years 1854-60, the period of his earliest and finest photography, allowing viewers to become familiar with the subtle light and balanced, velvety tones that distinguish Nadar's original work. Accompanying the photographs are essays that shed new light on the many facets of Nadar.

A dazzling, stylish biography of a fabled Parisian photographer, adventurer, and pioneer. A recent French biography begins, Who doesn't know Nadar? In France, that's a rhetorical question. Of all of the legendary figures who thrived in mid-19th-century Paris—a cohort that includes Victor Hugo, Baudelaire, Gustave Courbet, and Alexandre Dumas—Nadar was perhaps the most innovative, the most restless, the most modern. The first great portrait photographer, a pioneering balloonist, the first person to take an aerial photograph, and the prime mover behind the first airmail service, Nadar was one of the original celebrity artist-entrepreneurs. A kind of 19th-century Andy Warhol, he knew everyone worth knowing and photographed them all, conferring on posterity psychologically compelling portraits of Manet, Sarah Bernhardt, Delacroix, Daumier and countless others—a priceless panorama of Parisian celebrity. Born Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, he adopted the pseudonym Nadar as a young bohemian, when he was a budding writer and cartoonist. Later he affixed the name Nadar to the façade of his opulent photographic studio in giant script, the illuminated letters ten feet tall, the whole sign fifty feet long, a garish red beacon on the boulevard. Nadar became known to all of Europe and even across the Atlantic when he launched "The Giant," a gas balloon the size of a twelve-story building, the largest of its time. With his daring exploits aboard his humongous balloon (including a catastrophic crash that made headlines around the world), he gave his friend Jules Verne the model for one of his most dynamic heroes. The Great Nadar is a brilliant, lavishly illustrated biography of a larger-than-life figure, a visionary whose outsized talent and canny self-promotion put him way ahead of his time.

Mr. M.A.Thangasamy Nadar, (called MAT) a native of a village in Sankarankoil Taluk of Thirunelvely District in Tamil Nadu migrated to Munnar, Kerala, around the year 1940. He established shops in that region and lived in Munnar, for nearly two decades and expired in the year 1961, whose exact date of birth was not known. He owned two shops in Munnar Town, called "46 number shop" on the back row facing Munnar river and another shop called "Jeya Stores"(named after his younger son Jeyasingh David) on the inside row facing the bus-stand next to "DMS & Sons". He owned the third shop in Old Munnar called "Raja Stores" named after his elder son King Calvin (now "Matheena Stores" after the sale of this shop). While he was living in the Munnar area, he helped the poor people as much as possible and set an example. He started his career as an ordinary employee, and then grew to the position of a big employer of the region. He was leading a very simple life as a common man, but his lifestyle, magnanimity, helping nature to the others, differentiated him from the other men. Though Thangasamy Nadar is no more, he is still remembered by the poor people of the region, and some of them had gone to the extent of keeping his picture in their homes along with the pictures of their gods. Men may come and men may go, but this great man is living in the hearts of the people in the Munnar area, for generations. This book was written by T.K.Calvin and Job Anbalagan, sons of Thangasamy Nadar, out of memory and also based on inputs given by some contemporaries of Thangasamy Nadar, especially, Amos Rajamani. J Noble Chelladurai also gave some inputs.

Marseille A Century Of Pictures written by Gérard Detaille and has been published by Editions Parenthèses this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Detaille family categories.

Experimental Self Portraits In Early French Photography written by Jillian Lerner and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-11-16 with Art categories.

This book explores a range of experimental self-portraits made in France between 1840 and 1870, including remarkable images by Hippolyte Bayard, Nadar, Duchenne de Boulogne, and Countess de Castiglione. Adapting photography for different social purposes, each of these pioneers showcased their own body as a living artifact and iconic attraction. Jillian Lerner considers performative portraits that exhibit uncanny transformations of identity and embodiment. She highlights the tactical importance of photographic demonstrations, promotions, conversations, and the mongrel forms of montage, painted photographs, and captioned specimens. The author shows how photographic practices are mobilized in diverse cultural contexts and enmeshed with the histories of art, science, publicity, urban spectacle, and private life in nineteenth-century France. Tracing calculated and creative approaches to a new medium, this research also contributes to an archaeology of the present. It furnishes a prehistory of the “selfie” and offers historical perspectives on the forces that reshape human perception and social experience. This interdisciplinary study will appeal to readers interested in the history of photography, art, visual culture, and media studies.
