Excerpt from The Development of Nationalism Reflected in the Literature of Italy, 1775-1825 Is not found till the latter part of the eighteenth century. But to exclude the earlier part of the era as an important influence merely because the period had no definite mention of national consciousness would be really ignoring the true beginning. For the political, the social, and the economic reforms, the struggle with the Papacy, and the general de manahy the upperclasses for greater freedom were all essen tial parts of what would be the cry of the nineteenth cen tury. Without these things as a background it would have been impossible to arouse the people. To be a success a revolution must have the masses behind it, and unless they are partially educated, it is difficult to appeal to them. The advances made between 1700 - 1775 really began this education of the people. The reformers were not interested in unity nor in nationalism; very little mention is found of the former and the latter did not exist. But when the time did come they were ready. They were to make Italy. Yet before 1870-many things were to occur and many battles were to be fought before the dream could become a reality. No one who has grasped what Italian literature has meant to English poetry and English culture from the time when Chaucer left these shores for Italy and Milton re turned; from the day when the poet Gray crossed the Alps, to the days of Byron, of Leigh Hunt, of Keats, of Shelley, of Swinburne, of the Brownings, and of Meredith - no one I say can desire for a moment to depreciate the study of the Italian Classics. Let me repeat that no depreciation, no subordination even, of Dante and the classics to modern Italian studies is ln tended. That would be as inept as to neglect or depreciate Shakespeare in a chair of English at an Italian university: t/ze studies are complementary. The authors of this book approach the emergence and endurance of the populist nationalism in post-socialist Eastern Europe, with special emphasis on Hungary. They attempt to understand the reasons behind public discourses that increasingly reframe politics in terms of nationhood and nationalism. Overall, the volume attempts to explain how the new nationalism is rooted in recent political, economic and social processes. The contributors focus on two motifs in public discourse: shift and legacy. Some focus on shifts in public law and shifts in political ethno-nationalism through the lens of constitutional law, while others explain the social and political roots of these shifts. Others discuss the effects of legacy in memory and culture and suggest that both shift and legacy combine to produce the new era of identity politics. Legal experts emphasize that the new Fundamental Law of Hungary is radically different from all previous Hungarian constitutions, and clearly reflects a redefinition of the Hungarian state itself. The authors further examine the role of developments in the fields of sociology and political science that contribute to the kind of politics in which identity is at the fore.
