Fernando António Nogueira Pessoa, nascido em 13 de junho de 1888, Lisboa, Porto, e falecido em 30 de novembro de 1935, Lisboa, foi um dos maiores poetas portugueses, cuja obra modernista deu à literatura portuguesa significado europeu. Aos sete anos Pessoa viveu em Durban, onde o seu padrasto foi cônsul de Portugal. Ele se tornou um leitor e escritor fluente de inglês. Na esperança de se tornar um grande poeta nessa língua, Pessoa escreveu os primeiros versos em inglês. A fama chegou a Pessoa postumamente, quando seus poemas extraordinariamente criativos atraíram a atenção em Portugal e no Brasil na década de 1940. Sua obra é notável pela inovação do que Pessoa chamou de heterônimos, ou personas alternativas. Em vez de alteregos, identidades alternativas que servem como contrapartes ou defesas para as próprias ideias de um autor, os heterônimos de Pessoa foram apresentados como autores distintos, cada um dos quais diferia dos outros em termos de estilo poético, estético, filosofia, personalidade e até mesmo gênero e idioma, pois Pessoa escreveu em português, inglês e francês. Sob os seus nomes publicaram-se não só poemas, mas também críticas à poesia de alguns dos outros, ensaios sobre o estado da literatura portuguesa e escritos filosóficos.Embora também tenha publicado poemas com o seu próprio nome, Pessoa empregou mais de 70 heterônimos, alguns dos quais só foram descobertos no início do século XXI. Quatro heterônimos particulares se destacam. Três foram “mestres” da poética moderna e participaram de um diálogo vivo por meio de publicações em revistas críticas sobre a obra uns dos outros: Alberto Caeiro, cujos poemas celebram o processo criativo da natureza; Álvaro de Campos, cuja obra se assemelha tanto em estilo quanto em substância à obra do poeta americano Walt Whitman; e Ricardo Reis, um classicista grego e romano preocupado com o destino. Outro heterônimo, Bernardo Soares, foi o conceituado autor do Livro do desassossego, uma obra em forma de diário de fragmentos poéticos que Pessoa trabalhou nas duas últimas décadas de sua vida e que ficou inacabada com sua morte. Foram publicados juntos pela primeira vez em 1982 e atraiu a atenção mundial; uma tradução completa em inglês apareceu em 2001.

When Brazil was honored at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2013, the Brazilian author Luiz Ruffato opened the event with a provocative speech claiming that literature, through its pervasive depiction and discussion of ‘otherness,’ has the potential to provoke ethical transformation. This book uses Ruffato’s speech as a starting point for the discussion of contemporary Brazilian literature that stands in contrast to the repetition of social and cultural clichés. By illuminating the relevance of humanities and literature as a catalyst for rethinking Brazil, the book offers a resistance to the official discourses that have worked for so long to conceal social tensions, injustices, and secular inequities in Brazilian society. In doing so, it situates Brazilian literature away from the exotic and peripheral spectrum, and closer to a universal and more relevant ethical discussion for readers from all parts of the world. The volume brings together fresh contributions on both canonical contemporary authors such as Graciliano Ramos, Rubem Fonseca, and Dalton Trevisan, and traditionally silenced writing subjects such as Afro-Brazilian female authors. These essays deal with specific contemporary literary and social issues while engaging with historically constitutive phenomena in Brazil, including authoritarianism, violence, and the systematic violation of human rights. The exploration of diverse literary genres -- from novels to graphic novels, from poetry to crônicas -- and engagement with postcolonial studies, gender studies, queer studies, cultural studies, Brazilian studies, South American literature, and world literature carves new space for the emergence of original Brazilian thought.
