Sin was an extremely important and serious concern for the earliest Christians and the authors of the New Testament writings. Early Christians came to see the life and ministry of Jesus as challenging presumptions about the meanings of sin and faithfulness. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of different understandings of sin in early Christianity. Jeffrey S. Siker describes how the earliest Christian voices represented in the New Testament writings understood "sin" not only as a theological abstraction, but also as a real reflection upon human thought and behavior that violated right relationships with both other human beings and with God. Siker explores language about sin in relation to the Jewish and Greco-Roman contextual worlds of the New Testament writings, and examines the development and change of these worlds in relation to the modern concept of sin.

The Sin Eater written by Megan Campisi and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-02 with Fiction categories.

An old adage says there are really only two stories: a man goes on a voyage, and a stranger arrives in town. This is the third: a woman breaks the rules . . . Set in a thinly disguised sixteenth-century England, Megan Campisi's The Sin Eater is a wonderfully rich story of treason and treachery; of women, of power, and the strange freedom that comes from being an outcast – because, sometimes, being a nobody sometimes counts for everything . . . A Sin Eater’s duty is a necessary evil: she hears the confessions of the dying, eats their sins as a funeral rite. Stained by these sins, she is shunned and silenced, doomed to live in exile at the edge of town. Recently orphaned May Owens is just fourteen, only concerned with where her next meal is coming from. When she’s arrested for stealing a loaf of bread, however, and subsequently sentenced to become a Sin Eater, finding food is suddenly the last of her worries. It’s a devastating sentence, but May’s new invisibility opens new doors. And when first one then two of the Queen’s courtiers suddenly grow ill, May hears their deathbed confessions – and begins to investigate a terrible rumour that is only whispered of amid palace corridors . . . Can you uncover the truth when you’re forbidden from speaking it? 'A dark and thrilling page-turner that turns a dystopian eye on the past in an unnervingly contemporary way. All hail Megan Campisi' - Emma Donoghue, bestselling author of Room and The Pull of the Stars

From bestselling author Gary Krist, a vibrant and immersive account of New Orleans’ other civil war, at a time when commercialized vice, jazz culture, and endemic crime defined the battlegrounds of the Crescent City Empire of Sin re-creates the remarkable story of New Orleans’ thirty-years war against itself, pitting the city’s elite “better half” against its powerful and long-entrenched underworld of vice, perversity, and crime. This early-20th-century battle centers on one man: Tom Anderson, the undisputed czar of the city's Storyville vice district, who fights desperately to keep his empire intact as it faces onslaughts from all sides. Surrounding him are the stories of flamboyant prostitutes, crusading moral reformers, dissolute jazzmen, ruthless Mafiosi, venal politicians, and one extremely violent serial killer, all battling for primacy in a wild and wicked city unlike any other in the world.

Evolutionary psychologists have shown that we have inherited from the higher animals and primitive humans certain instincts which were necessary for survival in prehistoric times, but which incline humans to hurt other humans. I call them the Antisocial Instincts, and I propose that they replace the doctrine of Original Sin. Jesus did not come to die for our sins. The idea that God had to sacrifice his only son to make things whole is a repugnant idea. Jesus came to teach, and his principal ethical teachings can be organized into five Precepts, which directly oppose the Antisocial Instincts in humans and their institutions. Teaching them is Jesus’s principal redemptive action. Jesus did not intend to accomplish the redemption by himself. He intended that his followers complete his redemptive activity by following his five Precepts and using them to reform humanity’s social and political institutions. By doing so, we can become followers of Jesus in his redemptive activity, and in this activity find meaning, hope, freedom, and authenticity.
