This book is a journey to the land of faith. That land is our own planet, ablaze with the fire Jesus Christ came to set here twenty centuries ago. For most of those centuries, Christianity was something of a provincial phenomenon. It had won the West, then its American excrescences, and seemed to be happy with that. Islam, Buddhism, and the religions of India could go right ahead and divide up the soul of the other continents. To be sure, the church’s missionary thrust never ceased driving it out beyond bounds that were too narrow. But it did so in peaks and valleys, and self-complacency tricked us back into the ghetto more than once. This is a book of living witness. It teems with the witness of the new countries, the “young churches” that live the gospel today in the Third World, in another culture, and in a situation of poverty as their daily lot. The word of God is a critique of every human society. And so the activity of the Spirit among these Christians of the church resurgent in Africa, Asia, and Latin America is a critique of the way we of the West understand that word—and live it. Time was when we could magnanimously welcome Third World Christians’ “contribution.” Those days are gone forever. Today we have to be willing to be jostled in our certitudes. And we have to be willing to change our attitudes and behavior.

Doing Ministry in the Igbo Context: Towards an Emerging Model and Method for the Church in Africa arises out of reflection on experience and practice. The volume reflects on the author's own cultural context, religious heritage, and pastoral functioning. In addition, it considers the author's personal experiences in relation to the common experiences of others within the author's cultural and religious traditions and places these experiences and the voices they represent into mutually critical correlation. Thus, commonalities and dissonances in them emerge leading to insights where to go from there in providing ministry to the People of God in the «local church» context and still within the framework of one universal church. This book presents a contextual model of local theology that begins its reflection with the Igbo cultural context. The Igbo or Nigerian or African Church can have a pattern of ministry with a model and a method that are consistent with the peoples' values. To accomplish this goal a local cultural value must be explored and brought into the scene. Since the Igbo society is the heart of Christianity and Catholicism in Africa, the author relies on Igboland as his situational context. The exploration of the indigenous Igbo value of collaboration will be an advantage in ministering to the rest of the African people who have cultural resemblances to Igbos. The African Church has to learn from the Igbo values of umunna bu ike. Umunna is the basic Igbo unit, and possibly the most powerful missionary force in Igboland, and potentially an Igbo gift to the Church in Nigeria and Africa, and even beyond.

Focussing on three first- and early-second-century documents (the Shepherd of Hermas, 1 Clement and the Ignatian epistles), this work contributes to a growing body of literature concerned with the social setting of early Christianity. Maier argues that the development of structures of leadership in the early Christian church is best accounted for by reference to the hospitality, patronage, and leadership of wealthy hosts who invited local Christian groups to meet in their homes. Sociological models and types are employed to analyze the tensions that arose from excesses of patronage and leadership by the well-to-do. Recognizing the socio-economic setting of these conflicts corrects the interpretation of early Christian conflicts over the ministry as purely theological and doctrinali.
