Das Thema Erster Weltkrieg, hält aber noch eine andere wichtige Ebene bereit, die jedoch am schwersten zu vermitteln ist. Die Ebene des Kriegserlebnisses der kämpfenden Soldaten und dessen unmittelbare und langfristige Wirkung auf Physis und Psyche. Historiker der neueren Geschichtsforschung versuchen eine "Mentalitätsgeschichte" des Krieges zu schreiben. Die Geschichte der Mentalitäten, der Gedanken, Empfindungen und der Erfahrung des Ersten Weltkrieges wurde erstmalig von ihnen in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung etabliert. Da es keine Zeitzeugen mehr gibt, die man befragen könnte, bleibt der heutigen Forschung nur, deren Hinterlassenschaften auszuwerten. In Form von Feldpostbriefen ist eine ganze Fülle davon erhalten. Natürlich sind diese nicht als Botschaft für die Nachwelt verfasst worden und nur ein Bruchteil von ihnen enthalten relevante Informationen, die der Geschichtsforschung dienen können daraus ein Bild des Kriegserlebnisses zu konstruieren. Sie enthalten eine Fülle subjektiver Schilderungen, die durch Faktoren wie Zensur und Rücksichtnahme der Verfasser auf sich sorgende Angehörige, nur begingt als Ausdruck des wahren Empfindens gelesen werden können. Daher ist es ein schwieriges Unterfangen aus ihnen ein allgemeines Bild des Kriegserlebnisses zu gewinnen.
