This book provides the first systematic and comparative analysis of the German right-wing populist protest movement “PEGIDA”. It offers an in-depth reconstruction of the movement’s historical development, its organisational structure and its programmatic orientation. It depicts the protestors and their motivations, reactions in politics, media and society, and PEGIDA’s European network. The volume presents and compares the results of scientific surveys among PEGIDA-participants and brings them into the context of long-time studies on political culture in Germany, representing a comprehensive study of the emergence of contemporary right-wing populist movements. The book will be of interest to researchers, academics and students focusing on comparative politics, (right-wing) populism, protest movements in western democracies, and political culture in Germany, as well as journalists, political educators and policy makers.

Contemporary Germany is a modern industrial democracy admired throughout the world. Many Germans believe that they live in the 'best Germany' that has ever existed. Yet there are dissenting voices: individuals and groups that reject cosmopolitanism, globalization and multiculturalism, and yearn for the more homogeneous country of earlier times. They are part of a global movement, often characterized as populist, that values tradition over innovation or constant change. In Germany, such people are routinely portrayed as reactionary or even neo- fascist. The present study seeks to provide a portrait of these individuals and their organizations. Very little has been written in English about the cultural figures who play a role in this movement. When the political side is discussed--whether in its manifestation as a party (the Alternative for Germany) or a citizens' group (PEGIDA)--the cultural dimension is usually ignored. Jay Julian Rosellini places the so-called New Right in the context of currents in German culture and history that differ from those in other countries. With Germany the dominant country in the European Union, economically and politically, this volume offers an essential view of its current conditions, future prospects and political particularities.

Radical Right Populism In Germany written by Ralf Havertz and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-31 with History categories.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of radical right populism in Germany. It gives an overview of historical developments of the phenomenon and its current appearance. It examines three of the main far-right organizations in Germany: the radical right populist party AfD (Alternative for Germany), Pegida (Patriotic Europeans against the Islamification of the Occident), and the Identitarian Movement. The book investigates the positions of these groups as expressed in programmes, publications, and statements of party leaders and movement activists. It explores their history, ideologies, strategies, and their main activists and representatives, as well as the overlap between the groups. The ideological positions examined include populism, nativism, authoritarianism, volkish nationalism, ethnopluralism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, antifeminism, and Euroscepticism. The analysis shows that these ideological features are sometimes strategically interlinked for effect and used to justify specific political demands such as the stronger regulation of immigration and the exclusion of Muslims. This much-needed volume will be of particular interest to students and researchers of German politics, populism, social movements, party politics, and right-wing extremism.

Seminar paper from the year 2016 in the subject Politics - Political Systems - Germany, grade: 1,0, Emory University (Candler School of Theology), course: History of Christian-Muslim Relations, language: English, abstract: “Islam does not belong to Germany.” This statement, which is taken out of the Alternative for Germany’s (AfD) party platform, conflicts with 4.89% of the German population being Muslims as of 2012. What makes the AfD as well as the protest movement “Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West” (PEGIDA) believe that the religion of about 5% of the population does not belong to Germany? How do they even get to a statement like that in a country that has religious freedom as part of its Grundgesetz? On March 13, 2016 three states elected their state parliaments. The AfD reached between 12.6% and 24.3% of the votes. What makes the anti-Islam and anti-refugee rhetoric so appealing? Where is the frustration coming from? While the AfD celebrates their election victories and PEGIDA still has four-digit turnouts, the violence against Muslim individuals and communities increases. In the first half of 2015 alone, 23 Mosques were attacked. The crime rate against Muslim individuals remains unclear since the statistics of the police record anti-Muslim as a distinct category. The urgency of the subject is clear. In order to think about ways of dealing with the AfD as well as PEGIDA, the following paper will deal with the origins of the protest movement and the party as well as their positions and opinions regarding Islam and Christian-Muslim relations. I will end discussing the threats that come from these movements and look into possible solutions. My main thesis for the paper is that the threat to German culture is not Islam but anti-diversity movements like PEGIDA and AfD. I base this on the lessons Germany (should have) learned from its Third Reich history and on European values. The first part of the paper has an historical approach, the second part focuses on political demands and the third part will be an attempt to find ways to better the situation.

This thesis examines the rhetoric of modern day far-right movements such as PEGIDA in Germany and the Alt-Right in Germany with previous hate groups of the early 20th century in both countries. Due to the fact that these groups have had their most active days rather recently, historians have not delved into this topic much as of yet. Additionally, little has been written about the common rhetoric and ideas of these groups in the United States and Germany in a transnational context. These two countries have had fundamentally different experiences in the 20th century and both have a different approach to dealing with the memory of atrocities committed by both countries in the past. Yet both countries are dealing with extremely similar groups which tout nearly identical rhetoric. The rhetoric that these groups use today strongly resembles the rhetoric touted by groups such as the Nazis in Germany and the Ku Klux Klan in the United States in the early 20th century. Connecting the hate groups of today with their philosophical predecessors lays open a legacy of hate which has been weaponized for centuries in order to pass their own political agenda. The thesis analyzes the rhetorical connections of these movements with each other and their past counterparts along the lines of immigration, religion, as well as gender dynamics.

Kristína Peschlová April, 2015 Pediga's Rise and Fall: A Victim of its Own Success? The fall of 2014 in Dresden, Germany, has seen the sudden rise of the "Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West/Occident" (Pegida), a grass-roots organization that came into the play in October, 2014 with a handful of supporters and grew into a mass movement attracting thousands. [...] This paper argues that the internal split in the leadership, ideologically incoherent support base and the anti-systemic nature of the movement are the reasons for the visible decline in Pegida's support. [...] In addition, Pegida also accused the media of bias and labeled it the "lying press" (Lügenpresse), thus reviving a term that was used by the propaganda of the Nazi regime (Kirschbaum 2015), causing quite a stir in the discourse. [...] The very fact that the movement split just adds to the frustration of the people who may have thought it could eventually 2 In late February, Bachmann returned to Pegida and was reinstated as the leader of the movement. [...] What the future holds Why is it necessary to identify the reasons behind Pegida's current decline? The decrease in the size of Pegida protesters in the streets does not mean that the thousands of its supporters who took part in the demonstrations have had a change of heart.
