The Making Of A Hinterland written by Kenneth Pomeranz and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-22 with History categories.

This wholly original reassessment of critical issues in modern Chinese history traces social, economic, and ecological change in inland North China during the late Qing dynasty and the Republic. Using many new sources, Kenneth Pomeranz argues that the development of certain regions entailed the systematic underdevelopment of other regions. He maps changes in local finance, farming, transportation, taxation, and popular protest, and analyzes the consequences for different classes, sub-regions, and genders. Pomeranz attributes these diverse developments to several causes: the growing but incomplete integration of North China into the world economy, the state's abandonment of many hinterland areas and traditional functions, and the effect of local social structures on these processes. He shows that hinterlands were made, not merely found, and were powerfully shaped by the strategies of local groups as well as outside forces.

On the basis of first-hand materials gathered through decades of field research and fleshed out with the author’s insightful religious, cultural, and historical observations extending back to the Qing dynasty, ancient archaeological discoveries, and the legacy of Siberian peoples, this two-volume ethnological study investigates shamanic rituals, myths, and lore in northern China and explores the common ideology underlying the origins of the region’s cultures. Drawing from numerous oral myths, ancient documents, and archaeological findings, this first volume discusses the spiritual world of northern shamanism and investigates the various rituals, including ancestor worship, fertility, nature deities, blood sacrifice and rites, the worshiping of nature, and shrines. The book illuminates how these rituals and worships, animism, and ideas of the soul are imbedded in and interweave with the indigenous environment, culture, and history of the clans and people of northern China. The book will be of great value to scholars of religion and to both anthropologists and ethnologists in the fields of shamanism studies, Northeast Asian folklore, and Manchu studies.

The Northern Wei was a dynasty which originated outside China and ruled northern China when the south of China was ruled by a series of dynasties which originated inside China. Both during the time that the Northern Wei dynasty was in power and over many centuries subsequently, the legitimacy of the Northern Wei dynasty has been questioned. This book outlines the history of the Northern Wei dynasty, including its origins and the history of its southern rivals; considers the practices adopted by both the Northern Wei dynasty and its rivals to establish legitimacy; and examines the debates which preoccupied Chinese scholars subsequently. The book casts light on traditional ideas about legitimate rule in China, ideas which have enduring relevance as tradition continues to be very significant in contemporary China.

Excerpt from Northern China, the Valley of the Blue River, Korea The kind reception given by the reading public to our earlier volumes on China has encouraged us in presenting a second edition completely revised and brought up-to-date. Careful account has been taken of the remarkable economic development which has taken place in China during the last few years, as well as of the greatly increased facilities for visiting important places and remarkable buildings offered by the recent extensions of her railway system. We have passed but lightly over those parts of the country which are ill-supplied with means of communication, to give more space to descriptions of interesting points that have either been made accessible by railways or canbe reached by sea or river navigation. These itineraries are arranged in order of provinces and the latter grouped regionally. Korea, having become a Japanese possession, is now more frequented by tourists; it is crossed to reach Japan. M. Courant, professor of Chinese at the University of Lyons, who wrote the article on Korea, which on its appearance in our first edition attracted so much attention, has made a point of revising his work in order to give to travellers fuller historical and geographical information drawn directly from native sources, among others the Sam kuk sa keui, Ko rye sa and Tongkuk mun hen pi ko, three historical works, and Tong kuk ye ti seung ram, the great official geography. These Far-Eastern countries offer many curious studies to the geographer, the ethnologist and the naturalist; to archeologists and artists, a wealth of ancient monuments only recently explored, to tourists a great variety of country. The railway, every day extending further afield, is bringing within reach fresh beauties of nature, historic or venerated spots, new mineral wealth: linking the two banks of the Blue River, it will, to-morrow, by the "Trans-Chinese", carry the traveller from Manchuria and Peking to the opposite confines of the Empire to the teeming city of Canton and even to the vast emporium of Hong-kong.
