Si en el siglo XVII El Quijote y las obras de fueron las más importantes en la literatura europea, en el siglo XVI sobresalieron las de : Libro áureo de Marco Aurelio, Relox de príncipes, y Epístolas familiares. Fueron las más leídas y más traducidas en toda Europa. Y con toda razón, porque el escaso público lector de la época tenía una elevada cultura, fruto del Renacimiento de las obras griegas y latinas de la antigüedad. El alto grado de belleza literaria conseguido en Grecia y en Roma fue igualado e, incluso, a veces superado por algunos escritores renacentistas, porque a la sabiduría grecolatina supieron añadir la procedente de los textos bíblicos. Ese fue el caso de las obras que estudiamos en este volumen. Para escribir tales maravillas no bastaba con ser genios por naturaleza, como se suele decir, sino que era necesario haber leído las obras clásicas en sus lenguas originales. Es lo que se defiende en el presente libro, al atribuir la autoría de las mejores obras del siglo XVI a la figura esplendente de Luis Vives, una de las mayores luminarias de la humanidad. La demostración se hace mediante la comparación de los textos, el método más productivo en la historia literaria y lingüística.
