The transmission of wealth between generations was not only a narrative commonplace in nineteenth-century France, but also a topic of considerable cultural anxiety and intense political debate. Counter draws on a wealth of previously unexplored material to show how the theme of inheritance in literature and beyond acquired ethical, historical and ideological connotations, and was vital to nineteenth-century French conceptions of the family and of the legacy of the Revolution. « Dernier laïus sur le virus » met un terme au « journal viral » d’Enrico Rhôna ouvert au début de la pandémie avec sa « Chronique égocentrique d’un vieux gugusse épargné par le virus ». Si ce premier tome relatait sa vision décalée du confinement initial, le second « De vaccins douteux en variants vicieux, l’adieu piteux aux jours heureux ? » décrivait la triste suite. L’effroyable année qui, de juillet 2020 à juillet 2021, nous épuisa mentalement et physiquement avant que l’avènement des vaccins nous laisse espérer la délivrance. Malheureusement, dès l’automne, les variants Delta et Omicron amenèrent la quatrième et la cinquième vague des contaminations. Il fallut les combattre en multipliant les contraintes sanitaires dans une ambiance angoissante quand elle n’était pas franchement hostile. Avec notamment les manifestations virulentes et répétitives des opposants aux mesures gouvernementales. Mais malgré ces rebonds et ces entraves, une nouvelle lueur d’espoir peu à peu s’intensifia. À tel point qu’en janvier 2022 les autorités médicales et politiques purent considérer que « l’ennemi » était en passe d’être maîtrisé. Du stade pandémique nous passions au stade endémique. Subtile mais inspirante nuance pour un dernier laïus sur le virus...
