Excerpt from From Wool to Cloth One hundred and fifty years ago, in the days of homespun, when spinning and weaving were a prominent part of each household's duties, the value of quality of cloth was a matter of common knowledge. Familiarity with the process of making fabrics brought a general acquaintance with cloth, that does not now exist. Many persons today do not know the difference between worsteds and woolens - many more cannot distinguish between those of a good and those of an inferior grade. This ignorance of quality is not to be wondered at when we consider that what was once a part of household work has become a great national industry. The inability to judge cloth is a matter not only detrimental to the interests of the consumer, but also to those of the manufacturer. ... If she wishes to weave a pattern in the cloth, no longer does she pick up threads of warp now here, now there, according to the designs. It is all worked out for her on the loom. Each thread with almost human intelligence settles automatically into its appointed place, and the weaver is only a machine tender. [Illustration: FLY SHUTTLE HAND LOOM. The Pulling of the Reed Automatically Throws the Shuttle Back and Forth and Works the Harness, Making a Shed at the Proper Time.] [Sidenote: Primitive Fabrics] No textiles of primitive people were ever woven in "pieces" or "bolts" of yards and yards in length to be cut into garments. The cloth was made of the size and shape to serve the particular purpose for which it was designed. The mat, robe, or blanket had tribal outlines and proportions and was made according to the materials and the use of common forms that prevailed among the tribes.

Excerpt from Study of Fabrics The object of this book is to give the reader a knowledge of the various textile fibers, their properties in regard to warmth and hygiene, their cleansing and laundering possibilities; and such understanding of the processes of manufacture as will enable her to judge, intelligently, good and bad materials, adulterations, prices, weaves, etc. Upon woman devolves the responsibility of the economical expenditure of the family income; it is her duty to know that she is receiving the worth of her money, and, yet, most women are dependent upon the word of the clerk, very often far more ignorant than the purchaser. The standard of materials will never be raised to its proper level, until the consumers are intelligent enough to make the demand. A detailed study is made of each of the common textile fibers used for household purposes - cotton, linen, wool, and silk - taking up the growth, manufacture, physical, and chemical properties with special emphasis on the practical household tests which may be used in detecting adulterations and judging of the quality. Laundry problems are discussed at some length dealing with the cleansing agents commonly used in the laundry and the principles which should govern a choice of the method best suited to individual conditions.
