"In the Artificial Savage: Modern Myths of the Wild Man, Roger Bartra seeks out, through the history of the myth of the wild man, the literary and artistic mutations that allows us to understand its continuing presence through the centuries." "To account for the persistence of this myth, whether in the popular lyrics of the poets of the Reformation or in Spanish Renaissance humanism, Bartra combines two major currents of interpretation. On the one hand there is the history of ideas; on the other, a structuralist approach belonging to the anthropology of myth, which gives pride of place to the study of cultural textures. By using both Bartra develops what he calls an evolutionist perspective capable of constructing a history of myths (or, perhaps, an anthropology of ideas) - one that helps us to understand the long sequences of events without losing sight of the presence of structures. The evolutionist approach goes beyond sequential narration but does not limit itself to the formal examination of mythological structures. It focuses our attention on certain periods when transformations occur in the myth, and thus sheds light on moments of transition in Western culture." "The Artificial Savage will prove useful for students and professors in history, anthropology, literary history and criticism, cultural studies, sociology, biological sciences, psychiatry, and psychology."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. This book studies some important myths of masculinity in various popular genres, including the western, the horror film, rock music and pornography. The author argues that popular culture gives us highly complex and ambivalent images of men. The hero turns into the anti-hero; feminine and homoerotic material leak in; the male is often shown as the victim. Attention is also paid to important theoretical issues in gender studies and cultural studies, such as identification and the relation between subject and text.

The Freedom Of Man In Myth written by Kees W. Bolle and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-08-01 with Religion categories.

Myth is not a remote subject, restricted to the limited intellect of "pre-logical" man. The question "What is man?" is an ancient one. It is also a recent one, still unanswered in the impasse of our sciences. Wherever and whenever human beings are alive, there are creators of myth among them. Kees Bolle singles out one group as having the most significant "say" in the formation of myths: the mystics, who epitomize the common urge for a simplicity beyond the whirlpool of personal existences. And, surprisingly, the author finds that the study of humor provides a great deal of insight into the study of religious traditions.

Challenging Myths Of Masculinity written by Lee F. Monaghan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Social Science categories.

Many myths surround male bodies and associated bodywork, especially when such bodywork is labelled culturally or socially atypical or 'problematic'. Bodybuilding, for example, has been explained in terms of gender inadequacy and an 'Adonis complex' akin to reverse anorexia, while men electing to undergo aesthetic cosmetic surgery are deemed 'too concerned' about their appearance and thus woman-like. Myths also discredit men and boys who do not engage in appropriate bodywork when this is expected. For instance, amidst public health concerns surrounding a so-called 'obesity epidemic', men and boys who resist physical activity and/or attempts to promote a 'healthy weight' are deemed ignorant, apathetic and in need of correction. Drawing on extensive field research conducted in North America and Britain over a twenty year period, this book challenges such masculine myth making. Mindful of a rich sociological tradition that seeks to understand the social world as lived and experienced, the authors provide insights that are likely to challenge common perceptions of various groups of men and boys, their diverse physical cultures, shared ways of being and identities. Presenting empirically grounded understandings of diverse bodily practices and discourses including bodybuilding, cosmetic surgery, dieting and nightclub security, Challenging Myths of Masculinity will appeal to scholars of sociology, geography and cultural studies, with interests in gender, embodiment and masculinities.
