Excerpt from Register of the Officers and Cadets of the Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va: July, 1863 Ignorance, absence of temptation, the presence of all good impressions, constitute much of the innocence of mere childhood - so beautiful while it lasts - so sure to be soon blighted. It is blighted in the first experience of life, most commonly when a boy first goes to school. Then his mere inno cence, which, indeed, he may be said to have worn rather instinctively than from choice, becomes grievously polluted. It is indeed a discouraging seai son - the exact image of the ungenial springs of our natural year. But after this, there comes, as it were, a second beginning of life, when princi ple takes the place of innocence when thought and inquiry awaken when, out of the mere chaos of boyhood, the elements of the future char acter of the man begin to appear. Blessed are they for whom the confa sion and disarray of their boyish life is quickened into a true life by the moving of the Spirit of God! Blessed are they for whom the beginnings of thought and inquiry are the beginnings also of faith and love, when the new character receives, as it is forming, the Christian seed, and the man is also a Christian. And then, this second beginning of life, resting on faith and conscious principle, and not on mere passive innocence, stands sure for the middle and the end. Excerpt from The Royal Military Chronicle, or British Officers Monthly Register and Mentor, for May, 1813 Gsul Btl-zs owes his birth to a country, which has certainly contributed its due share both to the defence and glory of Europe, of which he is a member. His father was an Irish Gentleman we believe s Dublin merchant, at a time when Dublin had a trade as well as a Custom House. The family is very respectable, though not rich. Its best wealth perhaps is the reputation with which the acts of the son have gilded the modest worth of the paternal hearth. General Dilkes, we believe, was born about the year 1765. As his family is settled in Ireland, he probably received his education, such as it is, in Dublin. We say such as it is, as there is in fact a very wide difference, between the mode and practice of the education in Eng-p, land and Ireland. It is the custom of the latter country, we know no! From what cause, to introduce their youth earlier in life; and in order to qualify them for making a due figure, and for acting with some de corum and suficiency, it is deemed necessary both to commence their education earlier, and to force them as it were in a hot-bed, to cer tain premature acquisitions. In four out of ten, therefore, of our Irish Ofiicers, this characteristic will be observed; that they possess a good knowledge of arithmetic, and some acquaintance with their French, and perhaps their Latin Grammar, and here they stop; the early vice of their education follows them through life. They never add a particle to their knowledge from fifteen to fifty. It would bevery unjust to extend this remark to the many excellent officers now in our army but experience proves that it is the case with too many of them, and the most probable way of remedying it is to expose that insufficient mode of education which is the cause of it. I have seen, and am in the daily habit of seeing, many fine understandings which have been spoiled by it.
