Jesus’s death on the cross posed a dilemma for Saint Paul and the early Church fathers. Crucifixion was a humiliating form of execution reserved for slaves and criminals. Entgegen der immer noch verbreiteten Ansicht, man wisse nur wenig über das geistliche Leben im mittelalterlichen Kloster, bietet das Kaufunger "Regimen" tiefe Einblicke in die damalige Zeit. Wir lesen vom Beten und Feiern, vom Denken und Handeln der Nonnen, aber auch von den wirtschaftlichen Grundlagen des Kaufunger Stifts. Das Kaiserpaar Heinrich II. und Kunigunde hatte im Jahr 1017 auf dem Gelände der kleinen Königspfalz Kaufungen ein Kloster für Benediktinerinnen gegründet als Reichskloster; hier konnte der Kaiser mit seinem ganzen Tross Station machen. Aber seine vorrangige Aufgabe sollte sein, anstelle der Erben die zukünftige, möglichst ewige "memoria" für das kinderlose Ehepaar zu übernehmen. Aus solcher Verbundenheit heraus und mit dieser Erwartung zog sich Kunigunde auch als Witwe nach Kaufungen zurück. Dieser Impuls ging im Lauf der Generationen verloren; die meist adeligen Stiftsdamen dachten mehr an das eigene Wohlleben und genossen die Freiheiten, die ihnen ihre Pfründe schenkte. Die Wandlung vom Benediktinerinnenkloster zur Kanonissengemeinschaft war nur folgerichtig. Und als das Stift kurz vor der Reformation wieder zum Kloster nach der Regel des Benedikt umgeformt wurde, war es für die Zukunft der Gemeinschaft zu spät. Landgraf Philipp der Großmütige überließ das Kloster und seinen gesamten Besitz zusammen mit dem Stift Wetter der Hessischen Ritterschaft. Sie sollte damit ihre unverheirateten Töchter versorgen, die bisher oft in Klöstern untergebracht waren. Diesen zeitbedingten Entwicklungen des Zusammenlebens im Lauf von 500 Jahren wird anhand der reichen Urkundenüberlieferung nachgegangen. Die vorliegende Fassung entstand zwar relativ spät am Beginn des 15. Jahrhunderts, verweist jedoch auf eine "consuetudo antiqua", also eine alte Gewohnheit, die in der klösterlichen Ge-meinschaft seit langem bekannt war und gepflegt wurde. Deshalb kann man davon ausgehen, dass in die vorliegende Ordnung ältere Regelungen eingearbeitet wurden.
