El tomo el nombre de Juan Pablo II en honor de su predecesor, que falleciera treinta y tres dias despues de asumir el cargo. Juan Pablo II resultaba una eleccion sorprendente: no solo era relativamente joven a sus cincuenta y ocho anos, sino que era el primer pontifice no italiano en mas de 450 anos. Ocho meses despues, Wojtyla regresaba como Papa a su Polonia natal donde sus compatriotas, que aun vivian bajo el comunismo, le tributaron un delirante recibimiento. Este fue el comienzo de la extraordinaria relacion de Juan Pablo II con el mundo: una labor que rehizo a la Iglesia Catolica y llego a personas de todas las religiones en todas las naciones.Karol Wojtyla nacio en las cercanias de Cracovia en 1920. Estudio teologia secretamente durante la ocupacion alemana y fue ordenado sacerdote en 1946; nombrado arzobispo en 1964 y cardenal en 1967. De palabra franca y a menudo polemico, Juan Pablo II se convirtio en una de las figuras mas conocidas del mundo cuando la guerra fria se acercaba a su fin. Al cumplir ochenta anos, habia visitado 123 paises y era, sin duda, el Papa que mas viajes habia hecho.
