"The Organism as a Whole, from a Physicochemical Viewpoint" by Jacques Loeb Jacques Loeb was a German-born American physiologist and biologist, and his career gave him the experience necessary to attempt to tackle life and biology from a more chemical point of view. In this book, he refutes claims that chemistry and physics are far-removed from biology and that these sciences work entirely independently of each other.

Excerpt from The Organism as a Whole, From a Physicochemical Viewpoint It is generally admitted that the individual physiological processes, such as digestion, metabolism, the production of heat or of electricity, are of a purely physicochemical character; and it is also conceded that the functions of individual organs, such as the eye or the ear, are to be analysed from the viewpoint of the physicist. When, however, the biologist is confronted with the fact that in the organism the parts are so adapted to each other as to give rise to a harmonious whole; and that the organisms are endowed with structures and instincts calculated to prolong their life and perpetuate their race, doubts as to the adequacy of a purely physicochemical viewpoint in biology may arise. The difficulties besetting the biologist in this problem have been rather increased than diminished by the discovery of Mendelian heredity, according to which each character is transmitted independently of any other character. Since the number of Mendelian characters in each organism is large, the possibility must be faced that the organism is merely a mosaic of independent hereditary characters. The Rainbow And The Worm written by Mae-Wan Ho and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Science categories.

This highly unusual book is a serious inquiry into Schrodinger's question, "What is life?", and at the same time a celebration of life itself. It takes the reader on a voyage of discovery through many areas of contemporary physics, from non-equilibrium thermodynamics and quantum optics to liquid crystals and fractals, all necessary for illuminating the problem of life. In the process, the reader is treated to a rare and exquisite view of the organism, gaining novel insights, not only into the physics but also into "the poetry and meaning of being alive". This book is intended for all who love the subject.

What is now needed is a way of thinking about the physical that is realistic in outlook but which departs radically from the mechanistic post-Galilean tradition. Since it seems clear that we can no longer take for granted the certainty and absolute objectivity of scientific knowledge, any alternative view must be able to do full justice to subjective modes of knowing. Order and Organism shows how Alfred North Whitehead's thought can reconcile some of the most insistent demands of common sense with the esoteric results of modern physics and mathematics. Whitehead shows a way to resolve the perennial puzzle of why mathematics works. Under his view, it is possible to account for the necessity and uniqueness of mathematical theories without denying the fact that such theories often arise from the mathematician's essentially aesthetic interest in various kinds of pattern.

Shestopaloff and has been published by Akvy Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07 with categories.

This book is a continuation of previous studies of growth mechanisms by the same author. Results of earlier research have been published in books and scientific journals. This time, the growth mechanisms are considered both from the physical and biochemical perspectives. These two types of growth mechanisms form a single mechanism that governs the growth of living organisms. The findings relate and connect numerous aspects and specific features of growth and replication, which previously were considered as unrelated fragments, into a single growth and replication phenomenon governed by a general law of Nature. It was discovered that the answer to the growth puzzle resides both in the physical and biochemical realms, with the leading role being played by the physical, spatial characteristics of organisms. Geometrical characteristics of an organism define the value of the growth ratio, which in turn defines the distribution of nutritional resources between the maintenance needs and the biomass synthesis. The fraction of nutritional resources diverted to the biomass synthesis defines the amount of synthesized biomass, and through this, the composition of biochemical reactions. Thus, during the growth, combined changes in organism's geometry and related changes of influx of nutrients influence the composition of biochemical reactions in such a way that organisms progress through the whole growth cycle. The material is well presented. Any person interested in the subject and familiar with the basics of physics and biology will understand the presented concepts and the whole content, which is much facilitated by numerous graphical illustrations and numerical examples.
